Actually the silver block becomes a semi permanent fixture on the pinbox, and drops onto the ball which gets locked in with a sliding pin attached to a locking cable.

It's bolted to the pinbox with rather large bolts and the block doesn't extend much beyond the forward lip of the pinbox. In person it's actually a rather robust design.
