We just had a 72 year old snow bird wipe out 3 cars, maybe we should have age requirements...

I haven't seen much (if any) useable info. Just a few guys talking, trucks pulling trailers down a drag strip, and a truck pulling a ski boat past a camera. Nothing concrete, just generalities.
You (f1100turbo), Smokeywren, epnydad, oldcoot and others have put up a lot better info on FRF!
I guess you guys spoiled me! LOL

They do have interviews with industry spokesmen from Ford, Toyota, and Ram. The big discussion with another reporter was, how can the same truck have bigger numbers with no changes to the truck and that there should be a standard. Hey, I just posted this because there is a lot of discussion on this on the forums. Glad to see someone bringing it out to the manufacturers.

Just something to think about. The manufacturers have been aware of this standard long before it became public and have the results of their tests to these standards. Their engineers are members of SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) and actually wrote the standards. They are just not going to publish the actual numbers until forced to do so by the public or the government. Just like the mpg figures were finally published when it became mandatory.

I'd love to see how the old 1950 GMC 2.5 ton truck that we used to have would have faired in this test. It had a straight 6 gas engine that probably produced less than 150HP. I still say that driver knowledge and experience is by far the MOST important aspect of towing safely- but any idiot with a drivers license can go buy a 1 ton truck and hang a 40' 5er off the back of it that weighs 15K. If you really want to make towing as safe as possible, you'd design a testing regimen for varying conditions that allowed manufacturers to rate their vehicles capability for a given environment. I envision this as being a chart similar to what you have with gauges of wire and length of run. The more challenging the terrain and lower the drivers experience, the more truck you'd need. It is absolutely absurd to tell Jim that tows only in the prairies of Kansas and has for his entire life that he needs as much truck to do so as John that is regularly towing in the mountains of Colorado and is new to towing. Of course, this would never work because you'd have to have at least an inkling of common sense and an accurate appraisal of your abilities to make it work.
