You may have a valid point here. Can you give us a link to the source of your information so we can study this issue?
Thx.

Most folks can only afford what they can afford so often they take their chances. The bad part is it might be a pay now or really pay later decision.

Folks
The guy asked a question. Many tow with half tons. I did and changed. Let's let the OP try a few things before we scare him away.

Have towed with an 05 Silverado 1/2 T for over 70,000 miles and towed from a 26' to a 33' TT and now a 31' 5er with no problems. Towed from Concord, NC to Weslaco, TX to FL to the Bay of Fundy to Des Moines, IA to Little Rock, AR and never had a problem with the truck. I don't pull fast in the mountains, but neither do the semis. Would I go to the Rockies, Hell no, but haven't had any problems east of the Mississippi.

Yeah you got busted by the weight police and rightfully so. You can make some upgrades but it doesn't increase your payload and you are overweight for legal purposes. Some of the new F150's with the higher payloads and towing capacity will keep you in the legal numbers. There again some people will tell you still need a bigger truck.

So are you over weight with the 5r? Just because you have towed all over that doesn't make it safe. More likely lucky. If you are afraid of the Rockies then you're definitely under trucked.

To the OP. If you're under your weight ratings then I would suggest Air bags, LT tires and Bilstien 4600 shocks. You don't want 5100's. Those aren't for stock ride height trucks. I had 5100's on the rear of my Ram 2500 and recently made the switch to KYB Mono shocks. IMO they're a lot more controlling that the 5100. I kept the 5100's on the front because I have a 2" leveling kit on.
Problem is Bags run around $350-450. LT tires are $800+/-. Shocks are $$300 for 4. So $1500 to get a more stable ride. Certainly a lot cheaper than dropping $20,000 plus your truck for a bare bones 3/4-1 ton truck.

I was referring to the OP: with 7800 dry any extra cargo in TT & TV his payload would be challenged.

06 Titan pulling 9000 plus. Mods that helped me.
Firestone ride rite air bags
Electric tranny cooler, in addition to factory cooler. Note the factory cooler is not a lot bigger than an electric water heater element.
Equalizer hitch 1200 lb bars
Modified with friction sway control.

Not afraid of the Rockies, went there in the 72 El Camino and again in the 81, as they say, "Been there, done that." We winter in FL and have no desire to go west of the Mississippi anymore. Just because I don't tow with a Mack doesn't make it unsafe. Have no desire for a bigger truck when what I have does just fine at 55-65 mph. BTW, pin wt is less than 1100#

The payload/rear axle is the issue - even if it is the Titan XD.
That is exactly where our TT started empty. Ours loaded and weighed is 9080. You need a very good WDH like a Husky Centerline TS to transfer enough weight to the steering axle and trailer axles.

So 12% of 9080 is 1089 plus the hitch weight goes towards payload. Better check your payload or cargo carrying capacity posted inside your driver door.

I would do as many have stated, LT tires, trans. cooler, I would also look into a rear sway bar. Without a trans. temp gauge I would change the fluid often, I change mine once a year, I also change all my fluids once a year. It won't hurt anything to make sure it is in good shape, heat kills. Good luck with your set up, and be safe.

I did not mention it, but this is the main reason why I traded my Titan. I was also over on tongue weight, which I believe the OP might be as well.

The man is still here to talk about it, I'd say he's pretty safe, luck always runs out at some point. I was asked last week if I wanted to go to California, have no desire so I said no way, am I undertucked?? Man I hope not.

If we assume that your % is correct, which I don't doubt from my own observation, and then we consider the rarity of accidents involving 3/4 tons pulling RV's..... the only logical conclusion is?????
