We have several of each of the big three on the farm. Most are diesel.

Most of us on the farm agree that for pulling power they are all more than adequate without much difference.

GM is usually better for ride and interior comfort. The newer Fords are fairly bullet proof and comfortable, just too expensive. Dodge Cummins are the best powerplant, but ride and interior of cabs is lacking.

They all have their quirks and qualities. In the end, just get the one you want, they all do the job very well.

We had a 2015 Denali 2500 with the duramax and had it for 3 years till we upped to a 2018. the 15 was a very good truck and with the d-max never had any problems pulling our 9,000 lb rockwood tt up 10% grade or down in the teton pass. very comfortable, quite and with a very nice ride. the millage was great after broken in, took 50,000 miles but towing at 65mph 12-13 mpg and non towing at 75mph about 23-25 mpg good luck.
also the 2015 was the new body upgrade

I am partial to Ford. But I did want to say to go with a 350-3500 series and skip the 250. The suspension is virtually the same on the Ford except for overload springs and a larger spacer block on the rear axle. And the difference in payload is amazing, and that is important on a fifth wheel. JMHO Good luck on your search.

And that pass in the summertime can be a test. Especially going West up the hill from Jackson.

Hey

I just went through this scenario except I was buying new.

I didn’t get the Chevy because I didn’t like the interior campared to the Ford or Ram. Just my preference. I bought a Ram 3500 CC SRW short bed HO w Aisin. The entertainment center is the best of the three. Seemless hooking up w Bluetooth and other services.

That said they are all fine trucks. No amazing trucks.

Check out TFL truck on YouTube. I watched nearly every video. Mr Big Truck is another and Big Trick Big RV is another. The last guy is very good but he won’t recommend anything but an F450 for a medium weight fifth wheel and above. That may be exaggerated but he just likes big trucks like the rest of us.

Drive a Ram at least. They are like a raging bull or a Clydesdale on a leash. Ford’s more refined and 1 foot longer on the cc short bed and more expensive at least as I tried to trade for one. The Duramax is a fine engine. But I just can’t buy one.

Good luck!

Which truck

I bought a 2013 3500 HD diesel to pull 37’ 14,000. Have had absolutey no problems and would do same thing again if I had the chance. You would be better off looking for a 1 ton diesel as there are a lot of 250/2500 that are over weight, they can pull but still pushing the limits on a 250/2500 in ford, gmc, or dodge.

Or, get one of these and never worry again about what you are towing:

Actually, I just decided to sell my 5er and my truck today. Getting older and changing my priorities in life.
My 2018 Montana and my 2003 RAM 3500 with low miles. It would be a great combo for someone who just wants the total package.

That's pretty much the way I feel about the topic, too.

As mentioned, there are occasions where there are systemic problems. The Ford 6.0 and 6.4 diesel engines are examples, but these are both 2011 and earlier ... well before the year range the OP is looking at.

I'd probably avoid the Duramax engines due to the CP4 Fuel Pump problems that have existed for a few years. However, I'm not that certain how prevalent it is. I'm biased, because it happened on my brother's 2016 GMC 2500 Duramax with 50K miles. Under warranty, but was facing a 3 week repair stranded in the middle of Kansas. That ends up being more of an emotionally-charged reaction, rather than data-driven.

So, back to the earlier post: all of the late model diesels are pretty darn good, as are the transmissions that go along with them.

Good luck.

Check out my 2012 F250 diesel that is listed here on the forum. 130,00 miles but the engine is a new crate engine from Ford.

Yup!

Same here...

I'm 58 and getting divorced after 35 years (final next week)...sold the house and threw everything else away...hit the road with the cats, 5'ver and truck and full-timed for six months...decided that it was too expensive and just not my cup of tea (plus, I really just wanted my 5'ver back as a camper), then found a new place to live in a town I never even dreamed of visiting in Yuma, AZ and have started a new life.

While I love camping and RV'ing...it was part of my old life...

The 5'ver has been sitting patiently out in the storage lot since mid-July and has only been used once since then and no trips planned at this time.

Thus, I am either considering downsizing RV's...or selling it and maybe finding a new hobby as priorities are a changin'!

Ohyea it is a great place. Tonight’s sunset should be really red again at the expense of California’s wildfires. So sad to see.

2014 Ford F350 Diesel 4x4

I bought a used 2014 Ford F350 Diesel 4x4 with 40K miles on it. King Ranch. We love it. It gets 9 mpg towing about 12,000 pound bumper pull toy hauler. Does great in Colorado on steep inclines (Monarch Pass). In town gets about 13 mpg and on the highway not towing it gets 19 mpg. No issues.

I notice on your original post you currently have a 2WD. Whichever truck you select if I would suggest another 2WD. Most people believe, wrongly, that you can haul more with a 4WD because of the additional drive axle.

That is precisely wrong! The GVWR for both is precisely the same in the same make/model and the additional drive axle weighs approximately 400 lbs. This decreases your useful load by that very 400 lbs.

Id decide which truck you want by driving all three first, before making up your mind. I would Autotrader.com and cars.com to locate a clean low mileage truck of the type you want.

I have driven up to 500 miles to get a good deal and have never been disappointed in my choice. I saved $4500 on the last truck by being willing to drive to go get it. And I got precisely what I wanted. On any used vehicle the last consideration is color. But, I WILL NOT have a black one (just my preference)
