Used 2014 Ford or GMC

We are about to upgrade our TT (FE RKS246) to a fifth wheel (most likely Cougar or Keystone product).

I think that I have narrowed down my TV to a 2014-2015 used Ford F250 or GMC 2500....it appears to be the "sweet spot" on price/options/mileage.

I will get the higher ratio rear end (14-15k trailer load range) and probably diesel ...

I know there are only 3 kinds of people : Ford-GMC-Dodge and I would love to have all input.

My more specific question is related to the years 2014-15....are there any recurring issues with those models?

thanks

Yeah, I think you'll get a lot of brand loyalist responses.

We picked up a 2015 Ford 350 last winter and are still very happy with the choice 10 months later.

One reason we went diesel is that it's so much easier to fill while towing. Just pull up to a truck stop.

I got $20 that this tread gets locked within 3 pages.

Discussion about trucks never end well here.

I was looking at this year at one point on the Fords. The only thing I recieved feedback on from owners was go for the larger 6.7l diesel as it had fewer issues in those years than the 6.2l. I do not have any experience but one person who provided had experience with both and the other only had research but it was consistent with what the owner stated.

Two trains of thought here:

1) Choose the 5'ver, then get the right truck for it.

2) Choose the truck and be realistic about the 5'ver you purchase for that truck.

By the by...

I bought my 2015 Chevy 2500HD gasser brand new in August of 2014...

Has almost 75K miles on it and love it to death!

And I bought my 2015 5'ver in April of 2015 and made sure it was well within the tow rating of the truck...not just inches from the tow rating.

It now weighs in around 9500 pounds loaded.

I have owned both ford and ram diesel. I am happier with the Ford then ram. Ford has more room and service on a Ford in my area is cheaper then ram.

Cant say what Ford comes with but the GMC diesels will have the 3:73 rear gear. Yep choose your camper then buy truck to match. Later RJD

THIS. Or just get a large enough truck to begin with so you can purchase the 5ver you're in love with. ALL of the big three trucks will do the job. My choice was RAM and it was flawless.

On the other side of the street...

I am seriously considering downsizing the 5'ver or maybe even going back to a smaller TT...

Which makes me glad I didn't waste my money on a huge dually!

Or, get one of these and never worry again about what you are towing:

Interesting, my research came up with the complete opposite conclusion while looking for a 2014 to 2016 Super Duty. Many of the Ford forums have a plethora of common issues with the 6.7 Power Strokes and the prior 6.0 and 6.4. And, overall, the 6.2 has had a relatively clean bill of health with very little common, reoccurring issues.

This was my conclusion as well. I know my sons first 6.7 was an emissions nightmare, his current one he bought new in 2017 has been relatively trouble free.

I think any 2014 or 15 is going to be a safe bet if it has been taken care of. The gas engines are proven designs and solid, and the diesels had gotten past that intriductory to tighter emissions phase and are g enerally reliable as well.

I would not touch a 6.0 or 6.4 with a ten foot pole. They are riddled with problems. Just look up Ford 6.0 class action suit on the web. It cost Ford millions.
The 2003 Ford F-Series Super Duty (shown above) introduced the 6.0-liter Power Stroke diesel supplied by Navistar, and while that is an engine Ford would love to forget, it's now one step closer to putting that particular problem behind it. Automotive News is reporting that Ford has settled a class-action lawsuit brought on by problems with this engine that started right out of the gate and ultimately broke up the 30-year relationship between Ford and Navistar. It was a nightmare for the company that I worked for.

Ford or GMC

I have a 2016 F-250 Lariat diesel which I love except for a few things. At work, I have a 2013 2500 GMC diesel which I run back to forth to FL a lot.

Comparisons: Ford is more powerful and quicker. GMC has slighter better mileage (unloaded as I do not tow with it) at 22 hwy. Ford also seems to regenerate more. GMC is much more car like in the ride but the Ford is quieter. Ford has more neat options. If I towed more than a daily driver, I would lean toward the Ford. Tow little and the GMC seems a little better. Either choice I think will get you a good truck.

I have been a ford guy all my life. When I started looked for a two or three year old diesel one ton truck I looked at Ram and Ford. The Fords where stupidly expensive so I ended up with my first Ram (2014 3500 dually) and I can honestly say I don't regret it. Its a great truck - GMC would be dead last on my list.

GMC has an independent front suspension - great for a smooth ride, but I think components wear quicker. Ford and Ram used solid front axle - rougher ride but they are tough as nails.

Wow, they put the 6.0 or 6.4 in a 2014 or 15 super duty? Who knew...

Used Ford or GM

I am on my fourth Ram. Always going up. Started with a Dakota, 1500 Hemi, then a 2006 3500 diesel and currently a 2011 3500. Bigger trucks lead to bigger TT!
I have over 150000 km on my current truck and no major issues. Maintenance costs on diesels is higher than gassers, but better mileage, exhaust brake etc are all selling points.
The Ram utilizes the Cummins Diesel, and Cummins has been around a long time, and their name tells the tale. Cummins 6 cylinder vs 8 cylinders in Ford and GM, but check / compare the HP and torque.
I Love my Ram - but I am sure that all the GM and Ford owners will say the same.
Buy what YOU like, what you find comfortable and does what you want.

BTW ...... “real trucks don’t have spark plugs”.

GMC Tow/Haul "Grade Breaking"

My GMC 1500 has "Grade Breaking" when the tow/haul has been selected.

We primarily tow in the the coastal plains (flat or very sml hills) but our recent trek to TN, I found that going downhills (big-ins) I never picked up speed. When I got home, I researched and found that the GMC has "grade breaking":

"Tow/Haul Mode Grade Braking
assists in maintaining desired
vehicle speeds when driving on
downhill grades by using the engine
and transmission to slow the
vehicle."

Does any one know if the F250 gas has a similar feature? I have googled a bunch and can not find anything remotely similar to the GMC feature.

I know that if I opt for diesel; then exhaust breaking becomes the go to method.

Yes. In T/H mode the F250 with the 6.2L will drop down to as low as 2nd (out of 6) gear to slow the truck and trailer using the transmission and engine resistance and compression for braking.
