If a store has a closed sign, but forgot to lock the doors, it doesn't mean I can just go in and shop.
Essentially, not the same thing. Public road vs. private property. Look at it this way, you are legally allowed to drive on a public road unless a physical obstruction is in place (i.e. baaracade, gate, etc.). Entering a private premise, with "closed sign" is called tresspass, because it is construed by the average person that a private premisis, where a closed sign is displayed, should be construed as a place of non entry.
Hope that helps. I did sleep at a Holiday Inn Express last night!

I think they leave the monitors facing out to encourage responsible, law abiding citizens/truckers to voluntarily meet the legal guidelines. With a fresh load, you may not know you're over weight. But learning that at a non-enforced scale may motivate a trucker to offload a little before rolling across an enforced one and paying a fine. As a society, we save road repair dollars at the expense of a little electricity. Think of it as one of those radar trailers near a construction zone saying "Your speed is..." Better to slow down at that sign than get chased down by the trooper around the next bend.

Cat scales are different then state highway truck scales to begin with. If you can not afford $10.00 at a cat scale which is divided to 3 selection, all your going to get is a total weight. If someone can't afford the cost then how do you buy fuel? Why would you even want to do it? If you do not know your total weight, then I guess you have a problem.

I have never seen any trucks parked at a closed weight station here in the U.S.

YMMV

As always I would check with the local state police before I used a state scale in some states when it says closed it means, closed / no trespassing. Here most of the scale pull offs for portable scales are also marked no trespassing barricades or not.

Then you must not be paying attention. I see them all the time.

BTW cat scales are less than $10 and give you 3 axle weight.

I'd rather see them parked at scales than use the on/off ramps of I-20.

Perhaps I'm not - that's why I said YMMV.

I used the state scale on I-84 EB on the way to Rapid City, SD. to weigh my outfit.
There is an overhead board with the power on and a zeroed scale pad.
Just pulled on slow and stopped easy.
I know there are cameras before you go in and at the scale house, so if there is, was, or will be a problem they have my tag number and can find me if they want me.

I say use them but be careful how you do so.

Actually I use the CAT scales often; I have scale tickets too prove it. So I guess asking about possibly using a public free scale makes me poor. Thanks for the insight.

I like to see truckers parked at Scales in Ontario. Better some sleeper time than a accident IMHO. I have never seen a free scale and use a local gravel pit scale close by. Weigh the Truck then the truck and the trailer. Get all weights easy..

Any time I've tried that at a closed Mich. weight station, I've never been able to see a readout thru the window.

I tried it once when a station was open, but had no trucks in front of me. I went directly to the parking area, then walked into the station to ask permission. The attendant (MI State Police IIRC) was a bit grumpy about it, and said weighing RV was not their responsibility, and to do so would be denying a public weight facility the ability to generate income. Blah, blah, blah, blah.

I think she expected me to put up a fuss. Instead, I thanked her anyway for her time, and started to leave. This must have made her feel guilty, as she told me to go ahead and pull thru.

In either case, I've never heard of anybody being handcuffed, fined, or otherwise penalized for "trespassing" on a weight station. If a trooper came by, and saw you peeking in the window, I'm sure they might check out the situation. Probably tell you it's closed, and move on.

Then again, they might open the building and turn around the screen for you!

Cause its fast and convenient, to check total weight? (If legal of course)

Fuel taxes pay for that. All vehicles pay fuel taxes. You pay for the scale. She needs customer service training.

Not entirely true.
Weight scales and enforcement is paid by several entities which are not funded by your CAR OR TRUCK GAS.
Ifta is the major funding source along with permit sales and violation tickets.

The DOT receives federal funding from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) for vehicle size and weight enforcement.
