wanting to pull a jon boat behind trailer

I'm thinking about pulling a small jon boat behind my 20 travel trailer. I was wondering if anyone has tried to pull double trailers? I running a Hensley hitch from the Jeep to the travel trailer. Then a weight and sway hitch from the travel trailer to the boat. I'm looking 4300 max weight for everything. The boat weight is 700 pounds max .Thanks for the input

the frames on lightweight trailers aren't strong enough for towing anything.
they're barely strong enough for a bike rack, even with a welded and braced receiver!

plus, i think double towing with a travel trailer is illegal in many states.
in Calif., you can only do it behind a 5th wheel.

I was thinking about welding some support on the frame rails to beef up for the hitch. I emailed Hensley a little while ago to see what they thought.

Double check the laws, I know that it is not legal here in Michigan unless you have a 5th wheel. And then you are limited to 65 feet from end to end. Another requirement here is that you also need a Double R Endorsement on your license. So check the laws before you do it, also these standard trailer frames are not made for towing anything else.

I agree
after close inspection of my frame
and
considering what it is already supporting
the welds and size of metal used
it has it's work cut out for it already

do not weld on that frame. have a receiver hitch built. use 4" square tubing with flat ears on the end. use 6 bolts on each end. the bolts allow flex when turning and is not a hard connection like a weld. the bolts and tubing flex allowing "nature" to do its thing and won't stress the frame too much. i tandem towed for years. i got pics in my profile. i never had issues. Texas limit is 65'. they don't really check that unless you're in a wreck or are just ridiculously long. then you're busted. check your state laws on tandem towing.

I also thought that that the laws for double towing where only for a fifth wheel plus an additional towable with a max length

Here, double towing is allowed as long as the trailer attached to the TV has dual axles. Does not matter if it is TT or 5ver. Still 65ft limit though. Seems this law varies alot so making sure your are well aware of your local laws and the laws of places you would travel with such a rig.

You just have to be legal in you're home state where the vehicle and trailers are registered this is covered under the Geneva Convention Treaties on Traffic, Florida just found out about that when they tried to introduce changes covering visitors licences.

Is this just recreational vehicles that fall under this statute?

You are going to research OK law. In most states that allow tandem, the first trailer must 5th wheel or gooseneck.

After taking a good look at the bumper. I thinking about replacing the whole bumper. Having some plates burned out to fit on both sides of the frame. Around two foot back into the trailer. Then replacing a new bumper back on the support that I put on the trailer.

i found the pic. it has plates on each end of the 4" square tubing. then bolted to the frame. the inside of the trailer's I-Beam helped to hold it in there, BUT the bolts did all of the work.

Actually....As I was informed by an RV dealer and triple-checked with the state of Michigan, The maximum double-tow length (5th wheel) for Michigan was raised to 75 feet as of 2013...

Here's mine. No problems pulling a flat bottom behind the TT here in Arkansas. And I agree, bolt, dont weld. Allows some movement, welding would be to rigid and cause cracks.

I am generally one if those guys that sides with double towing. My fear for you is the tow vehicle you are using. If you notice in most pictures you're seeing 3/4 or 1 ton diesels towing doubles. I recommend this since you're going to have a lot more trailer than tow vehicle. I have the last dodge that was posted by the co op tanks with the jet ski on the end... I haven't ever felt that the trailer was going to toss me around with the truck I have. That would be my only concern in your case with a jeep but it may not be a concern of yours. Just wanted to make that point.

Good luck...
