You are correct. My truck is rated to pull 9300 lbs, but I am getting close to max truck GVWR with a 700 lb. tongue weight on a 5500 lb. camper......of course I have other stuff in the bed and the missus and dog in the cab......the missus gets mad when I make her ride in back. I am pulling only about 60% of the Ford stated maximum weight. If I were to actually pull a 9300 lb. camper, my GCWR of 15000 lbs would be exceeded if my truck weighed over 5700 lbs. My truck with a full tank of gas, me in the seat, a bed liner, TracRac rails, a small tool box in the bed and a few personal items in the cab weighs in around 6000 lbs.

The big limitation on a 1/2 ton truck is the GVWR and GCWR, not necessarily the tow rating.
