Our dealer was very detailed when it came to making sure that we had the right vehicle for the trailers we were looking at. Luckily, I already knew my numbers so I would have thrown the BS flag if he was off track.

There are some out there but do your home work.

It's the right thing to do. A few months back I had a few interested in my 5th wheel TH at 13,900 lbs. They were sure their F150 could tow it. (nuts!)

I had a dealer lookup the info on my truck to see if he could sell me the trailer I was looking at. They won't let you buy it if you don't have a capable truck. The problem is he looked up the GCWR and told me I could tow a 20,000 lb trailer. Later RJD

I do have to say when we were shopping around at an RV show this year, several sales men told us we would need a diesel dually to tow the units we were interested in. I was a bit surprised to hear them say it. It was in our plans to get a dually so we got what we wanted now and are pleased.

Thank you for the example. The first real world limitation on towing with a minivan (or any non-turbo 6 cylinder SUV or truck) is frontal area of the trailer. Such vehicles flat run out of power, torque, and transmission trying to pull more than 40-50 sq ft through the air at highway speeds, especially in the windy Midwest and West. Some vehicle manufacturers do include this limitation in their tow limits.

I get amused when someone tries to tell me their cross over car frame "suv" can tow a trailer. I like to walk them over to our 3/4 Ram and show them a real tow vehicle. You did everyone a favor by educating the folks interested in your trailer. Good job.

Sad to say not all salesman are very trust worthy. Had a new TT next to us at the storage lot, 30'-32' if I had to guess. Very tight so I asked if we could get them to swap spot's, sure enough it wasn't a problem. I asked the storage lot to contact me when they would move over as I wanted to be there to make sure nothing got damaged, as I said, it was very tight. So on the day of the move I'm over their just hanging out waiting and in comes an F150, nothing against half ton towing but this thing sank a good 6" when the trailer was hooked up, this salesman just really screwed these people over. Too much trailer, not enough truck.

I'd sell to them and tell them they should upgrade their tv down the road. if it can tow up to 5550lbs, it can tow 4200
