We just can't do it!

We have a mini lite for sale. Have had two different parties come to look. They show up driving an SUV, ask us what the dry weight is. Our dry weight is 4272. Then they tell us their towing weight is 5000 lb.!! or 5500 lbs!!
Both were very interested but we had to tell them, there was just no way they could tow the mini lite with their SUV. We just couldn't sell to them.
We probably could have sold the TT to either one of them but we wouldn't be able to sleep at night.
We hope that they went away and did more research before they looked further. People don't understand there is much more to it than that towing weight.
Of course, we told them both, if they decided to purchase a truck to tow with, to come back and see us!!

Lots of false information out there as to dry weight is the main thing to base towing decisions on............

Hats off to you...you reap what you sow...your buyer will come along, offer to pay what you are asking and it will be a very smooth transaction.

I was at a RV show this past January and looking at a trailer and he salesman said "it's 1/2 ton towable". I told him cut the crap and don't be telling people that because it wasn't 1/2 ton towable. Well, he said some 1/2 tons, I replied no 1/2 tons could tow it and anyone that believed him was in trouble.

I ran into a similar situation when I sold our Explorer. A couple of the callers wanted to use it for towing with a dry weight similar to your trailer. I told them it even though the vehicle had a max towing weight of about 5K lbs the real max would be a trailer around 3500 lbs GVW and they needed to look for more vehicle. One woman who didn't believe me later sent an e-mail after she had talked to her mechanic saying thanks for not selling to her. He said the same thing I did that the Explorer wouldn't handle the weight and could be dangerous if she tried.

Don't you wish those RV dealers selling us RV's were that honest. Won't go into detail but we have yet to find one...Last was Camping World sales guy. Spent over a year getting problems fixed on a used 5th wheel from them. The big bosses were great once we provided them proof of all the things we were told were ok...but were not.

You did the right thing. I had a friend who towed with a SUV and overloaded both the SUV and trailer, she died when she rolled the SUV, all due to being overweight.

A local RV Dealer, Albany RV One, will sell a 3000lb hybrid trailers and have sold them to owners of Mini Vans. A mini vans max towing weight is 3500lbs. A coworker of my wife, a couple of years ago, was buying one to be towed by their Toyota Sienna. I told my wife to tell her they will be over their limit once the load up with battery, propane and other supplies. They didn't listen and paid later in engine repairs. The ADK Mountains is no where to be towing overweight.

That is one of the reason I will never buy from that RV dealer ship.

I too agree you are to be congratulated for doing the right thing. Many dealers/salesman would not have told them the truth. Another common misconception I see is with truck capacity and 5th wheel trailer hitch weight. While the truck may be rated tow the weight of the trailer it may NOT be rated to handle the weight on the 5th wheel hitch combined with everything else (people, tools, etc) in the truck.

thanks for all the positive comments. We feel good about it, wouldn't want something like this to happen to anyone. We are hoping the web sites we gave them will help them make a good decision. We want to be safe and we want others to be safe. And yes, too bad some of these sales people don't have a conscience. Thankfully, ours did when we bought our new camper. We will bring it home when this one finds a new home.

I know that when I was in the process of buying my W&P the salesman made sure my vehicle could tow it by asking me what year/make/model my vehicle was. There are some out there that care. But they seem to be the exception to the rule.
