Eeyup, I only have 53 years experience towing with half ton trucks. Suspension upgrades and performance modifications do work. Started out with a 1961 C10 swb with a 235 ci engine and 3 on the tree pulling my horse trailer to 4-H Gymkhana events. Got some booster springs from JC Whitney and some 8 ply 700x15 tires from Tractor Supply and down the road went. Dad couldn't get away most weekends so here I was at 15 with 10 years driving experience under my belt out on the open road.

SO, you've been towing since you were 5 years old, huh?

Ranch kids start out early behind the wheel. I was spotting grain trucks in the field when I was 7 plus hauling loads of hay in to the home place following my Dad in another truck. Had to get a provisional permit when I was 12 to drive the 2 1/2 miles of county road to the school bus stop. When I turned 15 I went to the drivers examiner who knew me and he just handed me my drivers license and said here it is now you're legal.

Although I don't do it I don't think being 500 pounds over max vehicle weight is a big deal. But, being 500 over max axle rating should be a big no-no. My 1500, fully loaded and ready to go camping, is 280 pounds below max weight and 60 pounds below max rear axle weight. I can live with that. I just try to keep remembering the max weights are a limitation and not a goal.

thats close to ok, but tires should be in the weight category....NO D RATED TIRES....at least E, but F better. and what if you are showing alot of squat... then airbags are a must.
nothing like having the margin of big truck.

So 500 lbs over Max Axle Weight is OK? How far over Max Axle Weight do you think is safe?

The weights on Page 2 is on way home from picking up at the dealers.

It seems that "53 years experience towing with half ton trucks" you would of known a 1/2 ton truck with around 1800 Yellow Payload Sticker and a 5er with a dry pin weight of around 1500 lbs would probably exceed the GVWR and more important the Max Rear Axles Weights Ratings. There is only about 300 lbs of weight for the hitch. passengers and stuff in the trucks. A 3/4 ton Hemi with a GVWR of 10,000 and 6,000 Axles would of been a perfect fit and allow bunch of payload for stuff in the bed of the truck in in the forward storage of the 5er.

"close to ok" is not saying OK. [to exceeding gawr] my emphasis was on tires.... but 6000lb axles will bear overloading a little when you figure in manufacturer safety margin, but tires not rated for load you put your skin at risk......its funny that most E rated tires are rated at 3240 lbs so ford puts their axle rating at 6480....and axles bearings let go at worst..... blown tires...well you've seen the gruesome results on tv.

The 1/2 ton Ram I have looked at didn't have 6,000 lbs axles but 3900 lbs axles, the 3/4 ton had the 6,000 lbs axles. He has 4400 lbs on the scale weight on 3900 lbs axle and it was weighed on the way home from picking it up at the dealers.

My 2014 Ram 1500 crew cab sport 4x4 had a payload rating of 1232. Front and rear axle ratings are both 3900 pounds. Even with air bags my 1,000 pound tongue weight was to much for the coil springs. The hemi and 8 spd had power to spare

I now have a gmc with max tow. My payload is 2050. Much better

My VW Passat has a higher payload rating than the ram 1500!!

Well at least you're on the other side of the country...I don't have to worry about your 53 years of 1/2 ton towing experience and your overloaded rig knocking me and my family off the road.....

I had a new 2008 Ram 1500 for a short time. Went for a load of floor tile on a pallet. When the forklift driver started to put it in the bed it squatted so bad he asked if I wanted to break it down. I told him to go ahead as long as the front wheels stayed on the ground. The job site was less than a mile away. The Ford dealer was 20 miles away which is where I went after being unloaded. Ram 1500 trucks look pretty and ride like a limo but are not meant to haul more than groceries.
