Now honestly I could careless and am no way shaming anyone. I can say I pulled my current 5'er with a 1/2 ton all over the country with no issues. Just thought it was an interesting observation. Over the weight of a posted sticker is still over weight no matter what your justification is. However, as many have proven here...it starts...it stops...it maneuvers...it pulls...and we all do what we can with what we have...and can afford. Just do it as safely as possible and have fun while doing it...

You're right that people get more animated if someone suggests they want to tow overloaded with a half ton, but its because a 3/4 ton diesel will be more capable of towing overloaded than a half ton because the differences between a 3/4 ton and a 1 ton are less than a 1/2 ton vs. a 3/4 ton.

Don't get me wrong, I know there are differences. My research showed that in my model year, the F-350 has a beefier rear axle than my F-250, so its not just a matter of a derated sticker for license class, or an easily upgradable suspension part. But other weight bearing parts like the frame and wheels are very similar if not exactly the same.

Certainly can agree with that.

Once a 1/2 ton reaches it's max payload then 99% of the time it's reached the RAWR. where as when a 3/4 ton reaches max payload it's under RAWR. You have more cushion with a 3/4 ton. Just in the last year or two has there been more separation between a 3/4 -1 ton. My 12 2500 CTD was the same as a 3500 CTD except for the rear spring pack. Now most MFG are separating the 3/4 ton a bit more from the 1 ton.
My 18 2500 gas has a 6500 lb RAWR and I have 7280 lbs for rear tires. Everything in a 3/4 ton and 1 ton is made stronger because it's designed to be punished. A 1/2 ton is not a work truck like a 3/4 ton is and therefore the components are not designed to be over worked as much.

For Sure .... I am new to camping and 5th wheels but not new to towing. I see a lot of pressure and judgments on here about 1/2 ton towing , but I think 99% of it means well and wants to see everyone safe. Experience and 25 years of towing it is so important you know the strength and weakness of your TV and trailer set up. You can have all the truck you could ever need and without proper set up, loading and maintenance be completely unprepared to travel safely. That applies to all trucks. I my business we never had trouble pulling anything but the fun starts when you have to stop it... safe travels everyone

And that is exactly where I was when I made the jump from a 1/2-ton to a 3/4-ton pulling my previous TT.

I was barely within my tow rating (like many on this forum) with the 1/2-ton so I thought I was safe!

When I finally stopped 5-inches from the back of another trailer in a black cloud of tire smoke while coming around a blind curve on a mountain road, I made the decision right then and there that this was the final towing voyage for my former beloved favorite vehicle of all time Dodge Ram 1500.

Here it is about 20 minutes before that moment arrived just as I was leaving the campground in Estes Park, Colorado:

My former '09 F-150 was 600# over GVWR and 200# over RAWR towing our '11 Rockwood 8293SS TT with our family of 5 on board. So there was some wiggle room with the rear axle right at GVWR, but it was still close. It pulled adequately but you knew it was back there. It was definitely a better combo than when I had a Toyota Tacoma pulling a 5200# Roo hybrid TT. The Tacoma was right at its GVWR with just myself and my lightest son on board. The Tacoma was built for offroading but not for a tow vehicle.

We have a 3/4 ton that could pull our 40ft Columbus, but the Grand Design is a bit heavier rig. We pull the big C with a 1 ton...keep the 3/4 for the 30 ft travel trailer. Our pickups are both Cummins Ram.

We have a 2011 ram 2500 single axle 6.5 foot bed 4x4 with the Cummins 6.7 we are pulling a 31.5 foot 5er Rockwood signature ultra lite 8288wsa , am I within my TV limits? I think the truck is ok but the tires on the 5er have me concerned as far as weight limits Click image for larger version
