Question What do you think?

Hi from Texas! We're looking to buy a Surveyor Sport 240. We are used to towing a small cargo trailer, but have never towed a travel trailer.

We have a 2012 4WD Chevy Avalanche LTZ with the heavy duty cooling package and trailer brack control. We're rated to pull up to 8,000 pounds.

If our trailer weight is around 5,000 pounds, do you think we need a sway control hitch? If so, which ones should we be looking at? That is a world we know nothing about.

Thanks!

At 26.5' and weighing almost as much as your TV, absolutely! BTW, with a dry weight of 4800, a tank of water will put that over 5000. Best to get all your stuff in it, get the family and head down to the local CAT scale.

There are a number posts about what to use on this forum. I've seen a number of likes for the Hensley Arrow. I've used a Equal-iz-er 4 point and have liked it, although the clunking noises going around a corner can be annoying. Avoid anything that makes you disconnect the sway arm in order to make a tight corner.

I like the weight distributing hitches that included sway control, Equalizer, Reece Straight Line Dual Cam etc.

Definitely need sway control for that length of camper. I'd recommend Reese dual cam or Equal-i-zer W/D with integrated sway control.

i have an '07 Avy 2x4 with the 4spd tranny and tow package.
i have a 7200lbs. towing capacity and i tow a HTT that is about 3' shorter and 700lbs. lighter.

i have no problems and feel it's a well-matched combo.
i have the 1000/10,000lbs. Equal-i-zer and love it.

since you have the newer 6spd. tranny, you should be fine, especially since you don't have the mountains we have out here.

I use sway control & WD for my 20' TT (~4300 dry) and never had a problem. My b-i-l used to be a truck driver and doesn't think I need it but I don't agree. I drove a short distrance in somewhat of a strong wind to drop my TT at the storage place without any trouble.
