What do you use for a spare on Tow Vehicle

Just leased a 2017 Ram 1500 Big Horn with 20 inch rims. I just noticed that the spare is a 17 inch temporary tire. Being I’m leasing I really don’t want to invest a lot of money on a new oem spare rim and tire. Anyone have any suggestions. I don’t care what it looks like as long as I can run at highway speeds

I use the spare it came with... Mine is a smaller rim as well but is the same size tire (when converted from metric sizing).

The spare is rated for highway speeds on the ram.
It has the same overall diameter as your 20's

Run down to the junk yard and buy a real sized one for a spare.

They are a real wheel. My work truck, a ram 1500 has the same size tire by the same brand, Goodyear, just on a 16" steel wheel. My pickup is the same. Have 18" wheels or maybe 20s. Spare is a Michelin on a 16" steel rim.

I use the spare that came on camper. When the four Goodyear tires that came on camper wear out then I'm going to mount the spare and buy three more. The Goodyear tires are $300 bucks apiece or more

Ditto, my 2015 F150 has a smaller rim, but the tire on the spare is the same as the rest. Last year, I tested the spare. Towing my roo233s and must have run something over and the right rear tire went flat very fast. All sorts of alarms went off in the dash alerting me to the impending disaster. switched it up and finished to the destination.

I would get a real tire, don't know how Ram gets away with using temporary use spare tires on a truck. I seen someone towing a 5th wheel with one of these temporary use tires on the front drivers side of his 1500 Ram. Brother in law had one (temporary use tire) on his
Ram 2500HD, just my opinion, I would't tow anything with one of these tires actually on the truck.

If you check your owners manual it will tell you NOT to tow a RV with the spare provided with the truck. It is a temporary tire. I have been trying to find a steel 20 rim that will fit my 2012 Ram. No luck so far. I checked my spare and it is a temp. tire not for use only to get you to a service area or have a new tire put on the original rim.

read the manual

Apparently the manual. Maybe it changed, but at least my 2014 Ram is a real tire.

Re: Spare tire

Unfortunately it is a sign of the times. My bosses Acura TLX came with a built in air compressor and a can of sealant. Would help to get you to a tire repair/replacement location PROVIDED the tire was still able to hold air, but totally useless if the tire is destroyed. In this case, you would be stuck on the road until help could arrive. Manufactures are trying to lighten up vehicles in a quest of better fuel economy. For the prices asked for new trucks and cars we should get a full size spare, but in some application it means we get less cargo area. Not a problem with trucks as they hang the spare under the box. Now if some one could only figure out how to keep it clean and dry, so you don't have to spend a half hour trying to get the rim clean enough to mount on truck it would be really something.

My 1500 Ram also has a FULL use tire as a spare. How many people have stated this here and yet a few folks continue to challange it! Blows my mind!!

Do you mean a Canada thing being that they just don't "get it" or that they actually have small tires?
