93 here. My Ecoboost has a 93 octane tow tune. It does make a difference.

Engine knock is not the issue. Whether higher octane has any overall benefit is.
Some small cars need higher octane and say so in the owners manual, otherwise per the industry use regular gas and all is still ok and cheaper.

Yea, you try to run lower octane in a vehicle designed for 91, it will knock/rattle/not be happy.

X2. That's how my pick up is. It doesn't even run well with 91 that has ethanol in it.
