Easy... With the Ram years I could afford...fuel mileage. The rest was secondary bonus

After Uncle Sam and I parted ways I came back home and got a job working for a small local company.

I got a 1977 Chevy 1 ton with a 30 foot gooseneck flatbed and hauled one thing or another with it.

Drive for awhile gas it up, drive some more gas it up.....

No real power to start with and if the wind was blowing it was an all day trip.

Here in the PNW there are mountains between me and were I want to be, lessons learned with the ol' Chevy convinced me an oil burner was the only way to tow.

Yes the 6.4 cost more to run but I am willing to pony up the money, right now running back and forth to work I get 12 MPG towing depends on several things but last year it was at or about 8.5-9 if I did not run hard.

Hindsight, if I could get overs I'd go with a 1 ton diesel.

BTW. Be careful with K&N they let dirt in.

Don't believe. Read the fine print...or just call them.

I upgraded to a Ram 2500 Megacab (short bed) Diesel (Cummins Turbo powered). Absolutely no regrets. Even my wife was on board with it. The single rear wheel as opposed to the dually was our preferred set up. I opted for the 2500 instead of the 3500. They both have the same tow capacity with the single rear wheels axle. I felt I did not need the higher registration costs for the 1 ton nor did I desire to pay the higher insurance for the 3500. We do not regret this decision one bit! The Ram 2500 mega cab deisel effortlessly pulls my 2014 Cedar Creek 38CK . When we purchased the truck in 2013 we expected to upgrade out trailer eventually. NO REGRETS! The trailer has a gross weight of 16200. The truck is rated to tow just over 18K. The only issue is I have to get to the truck before my my wife decides to drive it! Tough competition, especially since she is a early riser!

Thank you for the maintenance answers.

I do like the exhaust brake as being standard. Must be much nicer than tow / haul downshifting.

The one thing, on both of them, is the built in brake controller. I might miss my P3 but I hear they work well.

From all i have read you do not want to put an oil type air filter on a Diesel
So this is a +1

It may be bordering a debate but I think right now it is very informative.

And for your last post... I do not think I would do any CAI or anything on the next truck. I did it because the price was right and well, it sounds cool sucking in all that air. I have mostly used the KN style cleanable filters just because I tend to ride in some dusty areas in the pine barrens so the throw a ways got expensive.

Just for curiosity why no oiled filters into the oil burning truck?

Noise, smell, price, trailer weight and convenience of all my vehicles and equipment use gas. Some need diesel. I don't.

Doc they say they dust an diesel engine because the engine pulls so much air it pulls some oil. They are great for gasser's.

Interesting. So then a dry filter would be OK then? Just not the oiled?

I was sitting next to a 2013 or 14 GMC the other day and I think my truck was louder than the diesel. I was shocked how quiet it was.

Diesel is the way to go. And buy more truck than you need because in a year or two you will want/need something bigger.

BTW DEF fluid has a shelf life of about a year so when buying it check the manufacture date. Glad I don't have to mess with it. I have one of those old stinky diesels.

Dirt Digger

Wish I could give you the majic answer that would make it all clear.....but. I've owned more than my share of trucks and cannot in the current market conditions (fuel price and diesel oprion price) make an economic argument for a diesel truck with the amount of towing that you do. BUT I can tell you with certainty that there is no comparison in performance. The diesel option no matter the make (yes I've had all three) will amaze you. The confidence it will give you is not easily quantified. The cost is however very real. I tow with a 2012 powerstroke and wouldn't trade it for any gas truck on the market. It just goes no matter what the load (within reason) and doesn't kill the fuel mileage like a gaser does.
