What make truck is good for pulling a 18,500 GVWR 5th wheel?

Looking at diesel trucks. Not a dually truck.

Everyone has their opinion on truck brands. You will want a 3500 or 350. take your choice of the Big 3 at that point

You mean as in semi type truck/tractors.... or diesel powered pick-ups that are not duallys?

This is a topic that everyone will have an opinion. Popcorn is ready!

New or used?
If looking at new I really like the 2017 aluminum body F350.
I have not been a Ford fan for a while but that truck may just change my mind for my own next new purchase.

IMO, at a GVW of 18,500 I WOULD NOT consider anything less than a 350/3500 DUALLY!!......Even a 450/550, 4500/5500 series. Especially if you plan on doing long trips. I am at probably at 14,000+ and feel that I'm at my comfortable limit with a SRW.

Just my $.02 worth......let the games begin!!

You do t want a dually, then get a smaller trailer. Its really simple, 18K pound fiver is going to have around 4000 pounds of pin weight. Add the existing rear axle weight and your going to exceed 7000 pounds onmthe rear end. Your first real issue then becomes tires, then springs, then axles. None of which will safely carry your intended load.
Get real and stop trying to get by with an absolute minimum truck for the job.

that kind of weight of the pin would put you in dually territory, no SRW 3500 is towing that to begin with

Like you I do not want a dually ever again ~~ so I bought a 2016 F350. Most of all I also bought a lighter 5er and pull only 12,750# now. IMO 14,000# loaded ready to camp is probably the max before dually territory. I pulled 15,000 once for a friend in an emergency and would not want to do it regularly more than a very few miles, 18,500 I'd not want to attempt with my truck. Hold on as there are some here you can pull it with a Ford Ranger as long as you install airbags.

OK, maybe a ego-booost won't do the job. How About a 3/4 ton - everyone knows they are the same truck at 1 ton - 4500 lbs pin - Some Air Bags get the lights out the trees and the back bump off the road - maybe a 4" block - super dupper springs - heck 4500 lbs pin no problem. Every knows those stickers are for the lawyers and not against any laws to run couple thousand pounds over those lawyer stickers. Heck -- we should all be towing for Ford Rangers.... :roflb lack:

I pull a 41' Cardinal, double axle with 5 slides and GVW between 18,500 and 20,000 max. Have been pulling campers, 5th wheels, goosenecks and lowboys for over 50 years. Converted to diesels in 2007 for the first time and should have done that many years ago. 2007 Dodge Duramax Maxicab Dually w/short bed and have had no problem towing lowboys with 30K gross behind it. Fine truck and performs well. Last year decided to get back into a 5th wheel. Traded motor home for the 41' bird and am very pleased with it. Three months before getting the 5th wheel, I bought a 2016 Ford F350 King Ranch w/long bed and SRW. It is my daily driver and I love the Powerstroke 6.7 liter. Quiet, powerful and never has missed a beat! Very pleased. Proof comes when hooking up 20K of 5th wheel behind it and going out on a trip! It performs magnificently and is most comfortable. Cruise control on Interstate is no problem at 70 but I prefer between 60 and 65. At no point have I ever felt as if it was underpowered, not enough truck or too much to pull behind it safely. Can't say enough good about Ford's Powerstroke 6.7. Will drive it or one like it from now on. Happy Camper. Hope that gives you some more info from someone that is very close to your situation and very happy with this rig!

You will most definitely need a DRW for that much weight IMHO, I have no problems with my Dually, just stay away from the drive thru's

Here comes the weight police!!! Everyone knows you don't need a Toyota to tow 18,500 lbs 5er. If it was up to the weight police everyone would need a Toyota to tow a pop up.

To each their own but it looks to me your about 4000lbs over what your SRW truck is rated to tow
