Normal driving conditions you probably won't notice it. If you happen to do a lot of spirited driving, or tow a lot, you'll notice it. I'm on my third Gen 4 Ram 1500 with the 5.7. Yeah, I can run 87, and the engine will pull timing so you don't hear it pinging. I most likely won't notice it just driving around town, day to day type stuff. Unless I'm hammering on it, then I could tell there was a power loss, lack of throttle response. But I tow with my truck about 70% of the time. Mostly my bass boat all over NC, SC, TN, GA and VA. Without a doubt I can tell while towing. Towing puts a lot of added stress on the engine, keeps it in the upper RPM's where the power is, which generates more heat, which leads to pre-ignition if running lower octane. When I go to James River and back, about a 650 mile round trip for me, I'll see about 11 mpg running 87, while I'll see 14-15 mpg running 93. The engine just runs better, power is there when I need it.

This is a camper forum, right? I'd assume we're talking about what gas to use while towing.
