What Size Toy Hauler?

What size toy hauler would you recommend for a 2012 Dodge Ram 1500, Quad cab,Longhorn Laremie, 5.7 Hemi, Tow package, 3.92 gears. I believe it's rated for around 10,000 lbs. I've researched alot of so called half ton towables, but some of them seem quite big to be towing with a half ton. Thanks

Your limiting factor is likely the available payload of your truck with what you're carrying in it and what is available to carry via tongue or pin weight. To hit that 10,000 pounds of advertised towing capacity, you can only have a 150 pound driver and pretty much nothing else in the truck. Each thing you add deducts how much you can tow.

I wrote a blog page about this exact topic:
What Can I Tow?

It helps explain hot to figure out what you can tow and stay within your truck's ratings.

I have a 2013 Toyota tundra rated to tow 9000 pounds I have the 5.7. And I have a 2012 sand storm 203slc out side length is 26 foot and weighs about 6500-6800 pounds loaded to go. My gvw is 7200 pounds on my truck tongue weight is about 950 pounds. All loaded the truck weighs 7000 so I'm under and good. My truck does very well I use a equi-l-zer 4 point sway and it is the 1200-12000 model. All that said I wouldn't want to go anymore its a great set up and is easy towing. Good luck.

Thank You for the great info, that is exactly what I was looking for. My combined weight sticker says not to exceed 954 lbs. I'm going to assume that is allowing for 5 passengers at 150 lbs each? Is that a correct assumption?

Not according to my Dodge manual.

Your rated payload for the truck should be on the tire loading sticker on the door pillar. Unfortunately a fully loaded truck such as yours will be the lowest payload which is calculated by subtracting the truck's weight (with full fuel and a 150 lb driver) from it's GVWR.

Seems like there is a 1000 lb differance between the GVAW of 3900 front and back = 7800 lbs, and the GVWR of 6800 Lbs. Which is why I was assuming it included passengers. Otherwise I would have Zero Payload capacity?

Don't go by the GVAW numbers. Use the GVWR number to arrive at your calculation. As stated, all items including fuel should be calculated.

Load the truck up with what you will normally haul, including people then get it scaled. Now you can subtract that from the GVWR and you'll have your payload allowance or what you can add to the hitch.
