We tow a 2013 Subaru Crosstrek which is basically an Impreza on steroids. As with all Subie's if you want to tow 4 down it must be a manual tranny, which ours is.
Have towed it almost 4000 miles now, behind our 2012 Lexington, and honestly, unless I look in the rear view camera, don't know it's there.
Base plate is redily available from Blue Ox, and I installed it myself.
It's also my daily driver, my 3rd Subi, and the wife drives a 2010 Subi Outback, also her third. Very reliable cars, and no problems with any of the 6 in over 400,000 miles total.
If you decide on the Subi, I would suggest you look at the Crosstrek, as it has a higher ground clearence, almost the same as a stock Jeep Wrangler. Might come in handy if you want to explore some back roads or trails, and not much more $ than the Impreza.
Plus, you have the fun factor, it looks different from the rest of the smaller "jelly bean" small cars out there.
