When did Trucks get so EXPENSIVE!

Currently I own a 2007 classic 2500 HD Silverado extended Cab. With my wife and 2 kids I'm finding the Extended cab is too small for children car seats in the back. So I was looking around for NEW and or USED trucks. WOW some of them are ridiculously priced!! especially FORDS. So I took a gamble and decided to look at new trucks and WOW. Some Ford F250's 4x4 CREW CABS are going on avg for 50k. Thats a lot of COIN!

I hear you...they are really crazy. After looking for months on message boards and what not for my 2011 Ram 1500, I kept seeing that they were selling for anywhere from 8-10K off sticker...and thats about right where my deal fell. still, paying that much for a vehicle that just drops in value still hurts. Keep in mind though trucks maintain higher resale than most any car.

All big 3 manufacturers are running similar prices. I shopped last year and ended up downgrading to a gas engine because of cost and need.

Those are just Manufactures Suggested Retail Prices. It all comes down to where you are buying and how good you ar at negotiating. I just traded a 2007 Ram 1500 with hemi. I bought a leftover fully loaded 2012 F-350 with the 6.7 Powerstroke for far less than the $63635 MSRP. Its all in how you deal. The dealers can take more than you would ever believe off the MSRP.

Yup. I may actually have to consider that. But my current duramax has had not 1 single problem since I bought truck new. Only replaced batts ONCE. I actually am hating to have to part with it soon. But theres just no way to go on long camping trips with child seats in the back of ext cab.

They really are. Of course you are also getting a lot more truck.

I remember in 2005 I went to the local Dodge dealer and had them source for me a brand spanking new 2500 CTD qaud cab (the year before the mega came out) just how I wanted. That means every possible option save the navigation. Sticker was just over 48K. This was in the good old days of huge incentives and I paid 36 (without taxes etc here in my state) out the door.

Now a loaded up Laramie stickers around 60, about 10-12k higher than 7.5 years ago. That is about a 20% increase in sticker price, or about 3% per year, which ironically is still less than inflation. And I see them advertising incentives right now that are around 8-10K, so a little less than before, but still pretty deep discount.

And I here you about Fords. The 2003 Excursion I have now had a sticker north of 50K. That was 10 years ago!! If they kept building them that thing would be 70K now!

Last fall I purchase a 2012 F250 supercrew XLT 4X4. It is the 6.2lt. Gas motor. If your wanting the diesel then expect to add 5k to the price. The sticker was 44+k. We walked out the door for just over 32K. Still not cheap by any means but don't let the sticker scare you. Most dealers will deal to sell a new one. I have a friend that just bought a 2012 2500HD Silverado w/duramax, LTZ was basically the same deal. His sticker shock price was over 60k. He walked out the door for just over 42k. His deal was with no trade. I traded a F-150 but the price is before the trade allowance was taken off.
Your right trucks are not cheap but 2 things have really changed with truck in the last 10 yrs. 1. A truck will hold its value twice as well as any car and 2. The capability of trucks today vs. 10 yrs ago is epic.

Many prices are up - much tech has been advanced and some of it unseen- computer related stuff like trailer anti sway and such, 'grade braking', transmissions are way different - auto 'ranges', tow modes, manual, auto, changable shift points.

Our 2013 silverado has a built in trailer brake control - I can check /adjust is off the gage cluster, read trans temp and a load of other info.
It has a backup camera that makes hitching up childs play.
The stereo...no need to go aftermarket for anything anymore.
blue tooth, garage door openers, and god know what all else.

I moved from a 2001 eddie bauer expedition that had every option except sunroof and air leveling to a barely over base LT (all star package, LT of course, camera and brake controller are the only options). HUGE difference in the truck and it's capabilities.

I can program the radio - stations, sure. But default volume too. Door locking and delays on locking, lights and heat are both automatic - and programmable in many ways, 2WD, all wheel drive, 4x4 and 4low. It included remote start too. Cylinder deactivation for mileage. can burn E85.

And that's before we even talk about onstar and apps for your phone!

Neat, cool stuff. And it's not even a 'techy' vehicle. I drove a 2011 I think it was loaded chrysler minivan...OMG! power doors, infotainment system, 'neon' looking interior lighting...too much.

Problem is now adays you HAVE to read the manual to drive the vehicle. My wife borrowed my 08 outback and had to call me to figure on the shifting (automatic, but has multiple modes and she got into full manual).

I looked for seven months at all three and I got the 2011, F250, CC, Longbed, diesel, XLT, tow pkg, RWD. It was the cheapest at $39,125. The Chey/GMC 2500 equally equipted was about $7,000 more and all the dealers would say was that it was a good price for that truck. The Ram 2500 equally equipted was only two thousand dollars more but I didn't like it as much as the Ford. What I found was that there are not many that are RWD and longbeds and this is in Texas were almost 1/2 of all registrations are pickups. The four wheel drive adds about $4,000 to the bottom line
and for my type of RVing I didn't need it. Most RVers do get the four wheel drive and also short beds. There are not many longbeds with RWD in the Houston Texas dealer lots. Good Luck and yes they are all to expensive.

We also traded (2 Chevys) for a fully loaded 2012 F-350 PSD Dually. ANd for far less than MSRP!

My 04 Ram 1500 Quadcab 4x4 Hemi Laramie stickered at 47k my 08 Ram 2500 Hemi Megacab 4x4 Laramie stickered at 54k and my 11 F250 Lariat 6.2 with everything except sunroof stickered at 64k. The Dodges were loaded by Dodge standard but compared to the SD were bare bones as the SD has electronic locking rear diff, hill start assist, trailer sway control, stability control, traction control, Nav, DVD player heated and cooled seats off road mode you name it. Is it worth the $$$ who knows as it is all about what you want/need and are willing to pay. I got this truck 2 years old with Ford ESP bumper to bumper 0 deductable to 150,000km warranty for less than half the list new and got more than blackbook for the Megacab so it was a no brainer.

I love my 07 LBZ, no problems; except for the several dent's and ding's acquired when I have loaned it out...

You should get pretty good value in resale.

In August 2008 I bought a new 2008 GMC 2500HD gas. It was just under 30 out the door with employee pricing for all.

Today, according to KBB.com, it is work 33k. That is more than I paid for it.

But it only has 19k miles on it. The low mileage might be keeping the price up.

I will put it up for sale real soon now.

I sure hope KBB prices are right because according to them my truck is worth anywhere from 20k-26k which is pretty GOOD considering its more than 5yrs old.

I wouldn't believe KBB, according to them my truck to a private seller is worth $10,400 more than I paid for it last July. $6,000 more than I paid if I trade it in at a dealer.

KBB trade value is fairly accurate when trading toward something new. Take about 20% off when looking used.

Otherwise my general rule of thumb is expect 20-30% off KBB dealer, and 10-20% off KBB private party sale.

Used vehicles are super expensive right now. Today's 2-4 year old used cars and trucks were new in 2009-11. Remember, the car industry tanked pretty bad in 08-11 so there's not nearly enough recent year used cars so the prices are stupid high. Supply and demand. This is also bringing up the prices on older low mileage cars too.

Reality is no used vehicle is worth more than a new one. If the incentives stay strong on trucks that may even drive down the price on used trucks - why buy used when new is getting cheaper all the time?

From what I'm seeing on TV there's more incentive now than in jan when we bought ours. Maybe we should have waited...
