To the OP. GO to "You Tube" search LoLoHo, this is a couple that have a 6.0 that they recently had "Bullet Proofed", an interesting process. In my opinion if the Ford can be purchased at the right price and then bullet proofed you will have a vehicle that will give you good service.

Make it simple, the only one that came out with a disaster was Ford, they had a 6 litre that was junk!

You'll find Pro's and Con's on every truck, every motor, every tire, every nut and bolt. In the end...personal preference and what truck, car, boat, trailer...matches your needs the best.
My co-worker is scratching his head this winter. He bought his F250 Diesel last year (2016) and I bought my Duramax in April 2017. This fall he gave me the run down of what to do this winter regarding fuel, additives and how to prevent fuel gelling. He's now had his truck in the shop twice to get thawed out and flushed out and is puzzled as to why mine is running so well in the cold and I didn't do anything to the fuel and I only plug it in at night if it's going to approach zero or below (16 days below 32F so far.) Not sure if it has anything to with the truck, but more of where he gets his fuel and where I get mine and mine is a daily driver, his, about once a week.

We currently own two fords, and I have them serviced at the dealer. I keep hearing the above statement about looking at all the cabs off. So I do, every time I’m there. I have seen exactly ZERO cabs off.
The only problem I’ve had with my 350 is back up camera problems. It’s been replaced twice, under warranty.
That being said, I would stay away from a 6.0.

SOME 6.0 had issues. Not all. If a 6.0 is still running today, it was either one of the millions produced after they corrected the problem, or someone had it 'bulletproofed'.

I lived with that with my old 6.5 diesel. A few thousand of the injector pump drivers had a flaw, and the pump maker insisted that the entire pump be changed. I had one with the issue, changed the driver module myself, and drove the hell out of it for years with no problems. But when i tried to sell it, people kept walking away from it, claiming that they didnt want "all the problems" the 6.5 had.

The internet has ruined the reputation of many things that didnt deserve it. 6.5, 6.0, coleman pop-ups, Roos, and on and on....

I have no affiliation but the guy knows these trucks inside and out. If he's close to you he may even check out the truck you're interested in.

Second there is a great forum that revolves around Ford trucks and is loaded with actual owners instead of opinions of someone who had a friend with an uncle that had nothing but problems scenarios.
www.ford-trucks.com
Good luck in your search.

Thank you for this info.

They are all good and all have their known issues. Buy the one you like. If your a Ford guy already, you will surely be happy with a Super Duty. I love my 2016 F350.

I had a 2008 F450 KR and a 2011 model year F550 Lariat, one sat 2 months in the shop waiting for a new instrument cluster (not engine related, I think) another month to get the engine fixed, not to mention the constant loss of power when in "regen" mode. I had to fight for a loaner and all they gave me was a 1/2 ton, it was through my own insurance where I could rent a decent size truck when I needed one.
The F550 had the crappiest transmission shift pattern ever, jerky as hell and no tuning could fix that.

There is an outfit in Montana that specializes in ripping the Powerstroke engines out of the Fords and replacing them with Cummins.

As others have already mentioned if the cab has to come off and it's not under warranty then you're almost better off running that truck into a brick wall and walk away.

This is (used to be) oil country and judging by what I can see in the lot of the 3 local dealers and when I talk to guys driving their truck for a living (this does not include the 150/250/1500/2500) it comes down to this, GM unfortunately almost dropped of the map, and since Ram introduced the 6.7 Cummins/Aisin combination, redisigned the chassis and front end they easily outsell Ford 2:1.

You can't name the engine without naming the transmission
1. Cummins/Aisin
2. Duramax/Allison - a close 2nd
3. 6.7 Powerstroke/Ford Tranny - unless they made significant improvements.

My 2 cts.

The cab comes off fairly quickly, as it's designed to do so. Faster to access stuff that way than pulling the engine out the front after you remove the entire front. Not as scary as it looks. As far as the transmissions, they are all good now. Some consider Fords the best one out there now. I had an Allison trans, and I sure wouldn't say a bad word about it, but overall, I like my Ford truck better than others I've had. Pretty much preference.

You couldn't pay me to own a Ram or any other Chrysler product. I do believe the Cummins is a great engine, just the rest of the truck is garbage. I would drive the Ford, if is wasn't such an ugly truck. The reason I didn't buy the ford was the "Super Duty" stamped everywhere on the damn truck.

My dream machine would be:

Cummins engine, Allison Trans mated to the rest of the ford drivetrain nestled in the Chevy body.

I do get tickled at the responses..........guy asks which NEW diesel is best, and ninety-elebben folks tell him about their 2007 model PowerGlide Deleted TurboMaster, or the issues they had with a 1997 Rolls Royce Forceglide, or something.

The question is only about which NEW diesel engine..........

Kettle meet pot...

The OP didn't say anything about new...he was looking at a 2005 with a 6.0. That's what...two generations ago.

People say the current motors are all good but we don't really know that yet, it's not something that becomes obvious right off the bat. I would say the 6.7 cummins is good, it has been out a long time now and is really just the same 5.9 with more stroke. The Duramax is solid, always has been. The Ford is the unknown. The 7.3 is great then the 6.0 was terrible and from what I gather the 6.4 replacement even worse. So is the new one finally good? Maybe. They all have their weak links but some have just one weak link and others a whole chain of weak links.

Also those that buy new trucks don't even care, they will trade it off for another before the warranty expires. I'd say this guy's choice is based on if he needs a crew cab. If he doesn't a 1998-2002 Cummins is the clear best under $10,000 truck, if he needs a crew than a pre 2003 Super Duty with the 7.3 is about the only option. You may find an early crew Duramax but I bet you have to pay quite a bit more for a nice one those years. If you don't need the crew cab nothing is more reliable than the pre common rail Cummins period, end of story.
