my fuel mileage increased from 8 in the 6.0 gasser to 11 with the duramax, pulling same trailer at same speeds. not huge, but a welcome sight.

Is that what your dash says or did you break down the math with the gallons and mileage between fill ups? If its the later, great, if its the dash, dont believe it......they are commonly wrong and you really need to check the mileage at fill ups and calculate it.

pre emissions diesels seem to to much better all around on fuel mileage than anything after 2007 when emission requirements kicked in.

I average 13MPG to 14MPG pulling my TT, 18MPG to 19MPG without. Hand calculated with handy phone app at each fill up. Lieometer is a little off, but good to figure on the fly.

my liieometer is off a little as well, but close enough. it reads a ouple tenths to the good loaded or empty. 15 around town, 20 empty, 11 towing. empty speeds are kept to 70, towing at 60 - 65

Well...don't forget the change in actual fuel from low sulphur to USLD which made diesel more expensive to refine and less powerful per gallon.....

The bigger the better, if you have storage for a larger trailer to tow, than max out your budget on the truck. If your like me, you would want to max out your space with the biggest trailer you can afford.

Some hindsight I have on our 2009 2500 Duramax. We have the crew cab(4dr) and the standard size bed. If you get a 5th wheel and have the stnd bed like we have, you have to get a more expensive 5ht wheel hitch, and you will have a 26 gallon fuel tank. So much for towing range. (Upgrading to a Titan 52 gallon under bed tank in the next couple of days.) The slider 5th wheel hitch has to be lubed, and can be removed but is not light. I think some standard 5th wheel hitches that can be removed, MIGHT be lighter.

One plus to the short bed is it is Easier to park
Another plus is it is a 2009, and ours is one of the last Duramax that did not need the diesel NOX reducing fuel system. It injects a liquid into the system so the diesel burns clean. Some call it bluetech, but it is basically urea, yea, urea. Most of the newer cleaner diesels use this fluid system, and it is necessary to drive the truck. Really that is not an issue, BUT if you run out, some vehicles will not start, others go into a limp mode, so always carry extra with you on long hauls. I am not sure how long or how many miles the fluid will last, (ask a forum, not your dealer).

Our 2009 Dmax pulls our rg3210 fifthwheel in all conditions effortlessly. The last tow we did we had a 45 mph head wind that killed the fuel economy and sucked up half of the tank, that is the reason I am upgrading to the 52 gallon tank.

I have the DEF in my ford, it says it lasts 7500 miles and top off when oil change is done. Mine seems to go quicker when towing but not bad....i carry 2.5 gallon jug with me just in case but non issue really.....just adds about 25 bux to oil change

X2.....added 2.5 gallons (11$ from ford) at ~ 6800miles.....another who travels with us says he got 4000miles to a full tank of def while towing his 16k plus triple axle 5er....still...4k miles is a ways to go, and nowhere near filling up 'all the time' like many think..

Im not looking to haul my tt 4k miles anytime soon....so im not overly or even remotely concerned....

Nothing against you personally, but I stand by my skepticism.

Look at all the other numbers posted in this thread and countless others, and you will see why I am skeptical of the 1% of posters that seem to pull down these fabulous numbers. What are these folks doing that nobody else has been able to figure out?

You just can't overcome the laws of physics. But, hey, we're all in it to , right?

Started towing my 28ft Jayco with a 97 Chevy 1\2 ton pickup or a 99 Tahoe would do ok but like everyone else was slow and shifted all the time. Bought a 2001 3\4 ton Duramax a few months ago and will never go back. Power and economy way better pulls the Jayco like it isn't back there. Just traded the Jayco for a Chaparral 310 and am so looking forward to my first long trip to see how it works. Truck is stock and gets 13-16 mpg with the trailer.

Our latest trip took us to Sunset Bay Resort in the Shuswap's yesterday, 550km from Calgary netted us 12.5mpg. Loving the 36 gallon tank on this beast as we arrived in Salmon Arm with a 1/4 tank left.

11 isnt "fabulous" numbers (diesel), but compared to 8 (gasser), im quite pleased. who knows, maybe the big numbers come from slow take off, gradual speed build up and realistic cruise speeds.

Just did a round trip from western Missouri to eastern Kentucky with a couple of fuel stops. 12.7 going to KY with a side wind most of the way. Coming back to MO was nice and got 13.2. Don't have a heavy foot and cruised at 62 as much as possible.

My 07 Dodge 1/2ton Hemi was getting about 7-9 on similar trips.

no worries, nothing personal, but he didn't even know the terrain and speed, so a skeptical comment can go along way. I'm going camping again this weekend, I will fill up before leaving and again when I return, I will post milage and gallons needed to refill and we will go from there. This trip will be a little more hilly but speeds will be less, a 2 lane state road instead of a highway! Load should be around the same! Its all in good fun! I do know my father in law has a hemi(2500) and doesn't pull anything and he is lucky to get 10 mpg on a good day,,,YIKES!!!

Well-we have a Ford 250 and be as skeptical as you want because we get 15-16 mpg with our 5ver. When we had the TT we got 16-17. I've told DH that we may never get rid of that truck. I dont know anything about it or why-just going to enjoy it.
