We've decided this will be our last pet. The heartbreak will be too much to have another.

Ha ha...pretty much, but we were so off course "arguing" about fuel economy, that it didn't matter much anymore at that point.

Sorry, I will refrain from posting off-topic in this thred now.

Went from a 2011 F150 Ecoboost platinum 4x4 with 3.31s max trailer weight of 8200lbs to a 2011 F350 4x4 Lariat 6.7 with 3.55s max trailer weight of 15,000. Neadless to say my fully loaded 28.5 Sandstorm loaded to the gills at 9000lbs will be a no isue. If I ever want to step up to a bigger camper it has a goosneck ball in the bed already.

Max 8200# is hardly a 3/4 ton, in fact it's on the light side of a 1/2.

8200 was on the Ecoboost F150. The motor was great, just didnt have the right tow package to safely pull my sandstorm. So up to the F350 SD SRW. I am accually haveing a small love affair with this new truck. Just gotta get rid of the tires it came with. It has LT35-12.50-18 E rated but its a Toya MT tire. Gonna go back to the stock size. Better fuel and tread milage.

Actually very few Ecoboosts have the 11,300 tow package. I couldn't find one on any dealers lots within 60 miles of me. Seems the dealers aren't stocking these max tow trucks for some reason.

Really want to upgrade....

Well, after our second trip with the new Salem 27RKSS towed with our 2008 Silverado 1500 5.3L, I am drooling so bad over wanting to upgrade to a 3/4 diesel. The poor Chev. was really straining this last trip. Only did 250 miles R/T and barely ran a mile in top gear. RPM consistently in the 3K range. Not to mention the 6.5 mpg. Doesn't help that it only has the 4sp tranny in it. Almost pulled the trigger on a loaded RAM 2500 Longhorn Ed. with a Cummins but not ready for the $400+ truck payments again just yet. Loaded F150 w/ecoboost seems almost as expensive as going the 3/4 ton route so that is the way I'm leaning now.

We just finished an 1800 mile camping trip with our V6 F150. Rather hilly and twisty for much of the drive. The V6 was a little low on power on steep hills but manageable. Gearing is definitely not set up for towing. The spread between 1st and 2nd is too much.

I was surprised to discover how hard it was to keep the truck planted on the road in a straight line due to all the wind buffeting from passing trucks and from wind gusts. So exhausting.... Took some of the fun out of the trip. If we had to, we could stay with a 1/2 ton (with V6) but everyone seems to be saying how much nicer towing with a 3/4 ton is.

Now we are definitely looking to upgrade to a 3/4 ton. A diesel would be nice but pricey. Also would like a supercab with 8' box. Why are so many of the F250s 4x4? Not sure why so many folks think they need a 4x4. For the few days a year we get snow, we just keep the truck at home and use the Subaru. Starting to look around and get pricing ideas on a used low mileage F250, 2005 and up. Don't want to spend $50K for a new one right now.

The 4 x 4 is great on gravel or dirt drives and pads.

My 2000 F150 was 2 wheel drive and I got stuck pulling my TT out after a good rain. My next truck was a 4X4 so I don't have to worry about that anymore. Plus, I like the look of a 4X4 over a 4X2. Whatever floats your boat though.

after fighting my boat at the algae covered concrete ramp with my old f150, i vowed to NEVER buy another 2wd tow pig again.. I only use the 4wd a handful of times a year, and EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM is worth the extra i paid!! Nothing sucks worse than campgrounds in the mts with STEEP dirt or rock gravel, and trying to get going with a near 10k lb trailer on the back.. Or when the lake is low and you gotta back bumper deep to get the boat loaded and up the ridiculously steep concrete boat ramp....NOW i just flip it to 4wd hi and set the e locker.....easy peasy..its always nice to be the guy who everyone keeps saying is "lucky" because he has the right equip when he needs it! LOL...and yes...i do offer to help others when needed

Isn't a 4x4 going to cost more to maintain in the long run? Any downsides to a 4x4? But we may end up finding a good deal on one that is 4x4 anyway... I guess for us, 4x4 may not ever help much if at all since we don't foresee camping anywhere that the roads are that rough. At our ages (50s and climbing) we are into more civilized campgrounds with full services these days.

I see that the truck manufacturers have sure gone for providing full tow packages in trucks now and include things like a built-in brake controller. I understand that beefier brakes on trucks (at least Ford) is now standard? I was reading brochures for the new trucks at a Ford dealer last week and it sure is confusing understanding all the new lingo and tech. specs. Couldn't make sense of all the tow ratings they showed. Used to be that you got yourself either a 1/2 or 3/4 ton truck and that was your only option.

I really don't understand the "1/2 ton towable" thing. Our trailer is just over 5,000lbs loaded to go. It's a real pain driving when you get blown around from wind. I honestly can't imagine trying to pull a trailer weighing twice as much as ours with a 1/2 ton (aside from engine power). Wouldn't do it for anything.

As far as extra cost, I have had 4 4wd trucks since 97...the ONLY extra cost I have ever encountered with them was with the 03 gmc ...had to replace transfer case...my last 2 Ford's have cost me nothing in terms of additional maintenance. There is a trade off though....a 4wd is taller (my f250 was taller than my lifted F150!) , you will also lose some mpg with a 4x4 , and you will also lose some cargo capacity from a 2wd ..and the 4x4 rides a little rough...(as my wife says....she is used to a bmw )...as far as 1/2 ton and 3/4 the towing capacity can vary GREATLY between them based on setup.

As far as 1/2 ton towable, that just means it 'might' be under your half tons towing capacity...not that it will be exceptionally safe or enjoyable to do so! Lol

Years ago had a 24 foot TT pulling it with a 1500 Suburban - never could get it setup but what I would have sway. Transmission went out in the burb the nephew hauled one of the farm 3/4 ton pickups to & hauled the burb home. Didn't use the equalizer/sway control hitch on the 3/4 ton HD pickup & there was no sway issue at all. Long story short that is when I traded for a 1 ton Dually of course that called for a larger trailer. The rest of the story is that we have now downsized to a FR 1809S Rockwood TT & pull it with a 1/2 ton HD Chevy pickup. At this late stage in our life this combo works great for us.

1st pull with the 2011 F350 powerstroke. Loaded the camper was right about 8500lbs. Pulled up the mountains like the camper wasnt even there. Needless to say I will never own a gasser for towing again.

I am with you. I never had a diesel and went with one due to mechanics suggestion and don't regret it. It is worth the extra money, and other than the extra cost for the diesel, it doesn't really cost that much to maintain. I have a 2012 F350 and about the same camper weight and the diesel hardly went above 1500 rpm towing at 65mph. Sometimes I forget the camper is there until I look in the rearview mirror
