i'm using an 08 1500 hemi with airbags towing a 28' wildcat 5er and 50% of the time there's a Lang 84D bbq pit (15 feet) following it. I only wish for something bigger on really windy days.

I have a 07 5.7L Dodge Ram 1500 quad cab with firestone airbags under it and i tow a 07 28' cherokee travel trailer. I don't have much problem towing that at all.

I used to tow with a 2002 1500 with a 4.7. It did OK but did lack the power.


Now i tow with a 2006 1500 megacab with the 5.7 and its much better all around.

07 Ram 1500 with Hemi and stock towing package and added Monroe Coil Spring shocks to the rear and heavier Monroe's on the front and we tow our 27' Wildwood ToyHauler with 2011 HD Ultra and 2005 Yamaha 650 and all our gear without issue. Setup can be seen in Profile Picture

Can't give you accurate weights as we have never weighed the thing. Have towed it all over Florida and as far as Indy and back a few times without issue. Ocassional bounce that the airbags others have put on would help with but the recent change in shocks took care of almost all of that. We are very comfortable with our setup. IMHO the hitch setup is a lot of the ability to properly carry the load comfortably.

Your most limiting factor is likely to be your payload rating. It is affected by your tongue weight/pin weight of course. But it also is affected by passengers, dogs, kids, bikes, gear, gas, generator, yadda, yadda, . . . Just make sure you account for all of it.

Not at all intending a challenge here but are those of you pulling a 5'er within your payload/axle rating?

We pull our Roo 25RS with a Ram 1500. I dont have our exact weights but the dry weight is 4841 and the gvwr is 6502. We get terrible gas mileage, like worse then most. We use the andersen no sway hitch which is really light too. The lease is up next year and we are looking at a ford ecoboost or suburban.

I have a 2011 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 4.7 with tow package, equalizer hitch, trailer is a 2012 surveyor sport 220 loaded weight 4800 lbs, I have no problems vary well balanced

In all fairness that Megacab tho "technically" listed as a 1500 is a 2500. The only thing on that truck that is from a 1500 is the rear leaf springs. Every other aspect of it is a 2500 series. The chassis,axles,brakes all from a 2500 series heavy duty truck. As for the OP question I had an 04 1500 series Ram with a 5.7 it towed my 1st camper that weighted about 5600 pounds just fine. I bought my current 30' TT that weighs about 7500 pounds loaded and it was tougher on the truck. I simply felt just outside my comfort zone so the step up to my current 2500 was made.

2004 1500 4X4 Quad cab 5.7L Hemi; towing our 2012 Windjammer 2809W, dry weight 6225. Weighed mine right before our last trip, 6887.

Gas milage was about 12 mpg on the last trip; one previous trip was about 10 mpg, but went out to western part of Virginia, llots of hills.

I should add it tows really well. DH can forget the camper is even there, our gas milage just really sucks like I said before.

We tow with a 2011 Ram 1500, 5.7L hemi, crew cab, with tow package, 3.92 differential, and air lift bags in the rear coils. We tow a 2012 Flagstaff V Lite, 30WFKSS...last trip trailer weighed fully loaded at 7460 lbs.

Gas mileage was poor on our first big trip, averaged about 8.5 mpg but that was up and down and through half a dozen mountain ranges out west , so it was acceptable, better by 1 or 2 mpg without big mountains or strong headwinds....driving without towing the rest of the time, mileage is ok for a full size pickup, which is why we like the 1500.

I have a 04 1500 with 3.92 rear end and off road package, I've added firestone airbags. I tow a 2011 Rockwood 8281ss 5th wheel, weighs around 8000 pounds, pulls it fine, but I don't take long trips. Depending on wind I get 7 to 10 miles per gallon towing and 14 regular.

WE tow with a 2011 Ram 1500 5.7 Hemi crew cab with 3.92 gears. It pulls our 2011 Rockwood 2604ss real well. Approx. loaded wait 6300 lbs. Took several trips last summer from Ohio to central Pa. Also went to Myrtle Beach S.C. in oct.and was satisfied with the way the truck pulled thru the mountains. M.P.G. was about 9-9.5 on both trips. Did get approx 11 towing across Indiana last summer. Real happy with truck.

Maybe so but Dodge has chosen to rate the Megacab trucks very poorly as far as tow capacity goes.

For example:

2008 1500 Megacab Laramie 4x4
3.73 gears GVWR 8510 payload 2070 GCWR 14000 max trailer 7400lbs
4.10 gears GVWR 8510 payload 2070 GCWR 15000 max trailer 8400lbs

2008 2500 Megacab Laramie 4x4
3.73 gears GVWR 8800 payload 2310 GCWR 15000 max trailer 8350lbs
4.10 gears GVWR 8800 payload 2310 GCWR 17000 max trailer 10350lbs

I am not trying to pi$$ anyone off but I used to own an 08 2500 Megacab and that was one of my pet peaves about it was how Dodge derated them.

I agree Dodge is pretty conservative with their towing numbers. My current 2500 with the factory 3.73 is rated to tow 8800 with a 2700 payload and the simple jump to a 4.10 gear adds 2K pounds to the towing number. In my case with the original 3.73 its 8800 and the half ton Ram I owned prior was rated to tow 8500. Obviously payload was about half but on paper the towing capacities are close however with a 7500 pound travel trailer on the back there is no comparison in operating confidence and comfort. I put aftermarket rims and tires (for the beach) that are larger on my truck so I made the jump to a 4.56 gear to help the truck's drivetrain with towing. Again I agree with the odd tow ratings Dodge uses taking the info above a 2008 1500 3.73 Megacab is rated to tow 7400 and the 2500 8350 now the lone and ONLY difference is the rear leafs hence the added payload wich would make sense but to jump 950lbs in towing makes no sense.
