Bought my 2003 2500hd duramax in 2004 with 20,000 miles, it is now sitting at about 210,000. Am planning on doing brakes and ball joints this summer. (Originals). Couldn't bring myself to buy new, even if I could afford it. 60-70k is ridiculous.
Also been thinking about tuner, would like a little more torque.

So that's how it works. Thanks.

In Oz, a new pickup of the type we have been discussing here, costs between $140K-$180K.
More torque, wow!. Mine has enough already. Don't need the agro or expense of a tuner. Too much grief later when things hiccup. My 2500HD supposedly had been chipped by the previous owner but when I put it through diagnostics at its first service (for me) they couldn't find where the improvements from standard were. The idea intrigues me but don't really need/want it.

We started RVing in 2014 with a 2003 Chevy 2500HD with Allison transmission and 8.1L gas engine. The truck had plenty of reserve capacity pulling a 4000+ lb trailer. My wife did not like the fact that it was a regular cab work truck (hand crank windows, no cruise, bench seat). She insisted we get a new truck before our 2015 trip to Glacier NP. I agreed only if a new truck had an Allison transmission thinking the price would change her mind. She test drove our 2015 GMC Duramax and we signed the papers that day.
When your wife says she wants a new truck, go with it.

I love my Silverado too. It is the first vehicle that I bought brand new and didn't actually see it until I went to the dealership to sign the papers and drive it home. I went on Chevrolet's web site and used the build your vehicle tool to pick out all of the options that I wanted. I then searched the local dealership's inventory and the truck that I bought came up as an exact match. I then called my friend who is a salesman there and gave him the stock number. A couple of text messages later and we had a deal worked out. He got me $8,000 in discounts and incentives and set up a time for me to come in and sign the papers. I have had it now for just over a year and 12,000 miles and haven't had a single problem with it.

Here is ours. It's also our daily and only driver (we're both retired). Official color is "Red Hot" and does closely resemble the Frank's sauce.

I love my 2016 2500HD Silverado diesel truck. It is a beast. It is the first diesel truck I have ever owned. I used several apps on my phone when searching for a diesel truck. I figured I have to find used because of price. In my search I found a leftover one with a $14,000 discount. It has more features than I need but happy that it does. I've had it for 16 months and put 40,000 miles on it.
I have a 32 foot FW and took it across country. The most impressive to me is the exhaust break. We went through Grand Teton Pass that was a 10% grade going up and coming down. Went up the mountain doing the speed limit of 65. When we started our decent I touched the break to activate the exhaust break. I told my DW that this was neat. She asked what was neat and I told her that I didn't have my foot on the break. She told me she didn't need to hear that. I had to step on the fuel peddle a few time because it was slowing me down too much. WHAT A TRUCK!

Our 06 happens to share the same PCM as the medium duty trucks have, the medium duty has an exhaust brake, LD trucks did not. A simple switch install and voila, an exhaust brake! People start off with the smart ***** comments when I tell them "I don't use the brakes" we've been all over the mountains in the eastern US and I've not needed the brakes coming down any of them. One of the best features I've done to our truck!

I have two 2004 Silverados. A 2500HD with the 6.0 Crew and a 1500 WT extended cab with the 5.3. Good trucks and the engines still seem rock solid.

We love our 2004 , 2500 HD Diesel with Allison tranny. 4 wheel drive crew cab and have pulled our 34 ft Cedar Creek for the past 12 years some 313,217 kms or 194,624 miles with just maintenance repairs. No majors thank goodness.
Would love the new units but as others have mentioned, I don't have enough travel time left in front of me to justify the expense. Our friends upgraded to a 2015 GMC 2500 HD etc and it is a treat to drive, quiet, lots of pulling power and a great engine brake. Still, too expensive this late in life.

Have 4 years left to full retirement. Currently we have a 2015 2500 hd with 6.0 gas, but will upgrade to a new truck for our travels. Current truck will have well over 120k in 4 years so a new truck for adventures will be awesome. We may not buy new but will buy one with low miles. And it will be a Silverado. Can hardly wait for the new truck but also retirement and much more adventure.

I too love the exhaust brakes. Saves a lot of pad wear.
The only thing I don't like, near hate actually, is the extreme noise from the radiator fan when it kicks in. It is deafening. I assume this is normal because that what my service guy says.

Ya I got to lovem. First new one was a 73 ordered $2700 wow. Then in 1988 when Chevy came out with the extended cab if was off to the races. Since then I've owned 8 Silverados 3/4 to 1 tons and they have all been good trucks. Current one is a 2015 3/4 ton 6.0 and it's a great hauler. I'm now waiting on the new redesigned 3/4 or 1 ton single rw drive as it will be time as mine was an early 15 built in March of 14. Saw a couple spy shots the other day. Looking good. Later RJD

My favorite Silverado was 1998. Had that truck from 98-2012 and miss her to this day.
I traded that 98 for my 09 2500hd Silverado in 2012. New toys needed a beefier truck.
Ive also had couple gmc and chevy work trucks over the years.Had 1 ford f150 and 1 dodge 1500 as well. None have been as good as the Silverado's Ive owned.

That is precisely how we feel about ours. At 1/3 the price of a new truck to boot. We do not plan on ever replacing it, just maintain it exceptionally well, repair as necessary and enjoy the ride.
You might consider the Duramaxforum.com if you want to really learn about that magnificent pulling machine of yours. There are people on that site with an encyclopedic knowledge of these machines and they are VERY willing to share and help. If you see posts by 407driver there it is me.
