Wow - interesting towing " facts"

My DW and I went to the local RV show here in Fort Wayne, IN. One dealer had several trailers marked "SUV Towable" and "1/2 Ton Towable". These trailers often had dry weights of 6,000 to over 7,000 lb. This was an eye opener! I am am guessing there may be a few SUVs and 1/2 tons that can handle these, but isn't this pushing the towing capabilities of most??

That's way to heavy for SUV's. I can see proper equiped 1/2 tons pulling that weight. The longer wheel base of the truck will make it easier and safer to pull a heavy TT.

Last summer I saw alot of 1/2 ton trucks pulling 30 foot 5'ers and the back end of the truck looked very stressed.

There are a number of new trucks that now are over 10K towing including my own dodge 1/2. The real killer IMO is the payload caps. It will be intresting to see how many of those numbers come down when SAE tow numbers will be required I believe next year.

My Trailer is roughly 7K loaded with out water or full tanks and my truck does just fine here in the midwest. However....I would feel much better about things with a 3/4 for the incresaed payload. As it is right now most of the gear goes in the trailer due to the 800 LB hitch weight. After you inclide a WD hitch, cooler, huge dog, wife and Kids into the mix you quickly eat up the reminder of your payload.

A lot of the dealers and manufacturers seem to only use the maximum trailer towing capacity of the tow vehicle without regard to the actual payload capacity of the tow vehicle.

My F250 4X4 CrewCab Diesel has a listed fifth wheel towing capacity of 15,300 pounds. But if I towed a trailer weighing that much I would far exceed the 2200 pound payload capacity of my truck.

Last year at an RV show, I was looking at a Sierra rear lounge model that was right at 39 feet long and when the salesman approached I told him I didn’t have enough truck for the trailer. He told me my ¾ Ford was more than enough truck. While the dry weight of the fifth wheel was under 11,000 pounds, and well within my trucks towing capacity, the unloaded pin weight alone was over 2350 pounds.

We only have a pop-up now, but are looking to get a small (<30ft) travel trailer.

Never, ever, listen to what the salesmen say. They will say anything to make a sale, and couldn't care less what happens after you leave their lot.
There are 1/2 tons with the right engine/drive train that will handle a 7000 lb fifth wheel, but I would sure be leary about pulling that much weight from the bumper.
I have a friend with the Ford Ecoboost that hauls a 7000 lb (dry) fifth, but he says he wouldn't want to pull much more.

My '10 F150 has a toe capacity of 11,200#. I am pulling a 32' trailer that weighs about 8500#. As mentioned above I am well below the tow capacity but I am right at my payload. My truck has 1920# of payload and I am guessing I will be within 200# of that.

We used to have a Ford Explorer that was rated for 7000# towing. I would guess you could pull 7000# if only a 150# driver was in the vehicle. Otherwise you'd be over your payload.

I think what they are getting at is that even 29 feet isn't what a lot of us would consider to be "small."

true I did not see the < sign but even so lol like ken said 29 footer is still quite large !
