Not too long ago emission testing was done with the drive wheels turning on a dynamometer at 40 to 60 MPH. Emission samples were taken at highway speeds.

VW figured out how to detect when the emission test equipment was installed and adjusted emissions so they it would pass. In this case it didn't matter if the state had testing or not, they were even passing in California. Now the question is were the big three US makers doing the same thing. I won't put it pass any of them the way the running of the numbers in the last few years!

I guess what I meant to say is that the EPA and CARB should have done initial testing at idle AND highway speeds.

Most people that have the tuners installed will just remove them before they take them in for the inspections. I wonder about the trucks that are "rolling coal". That is a lot of smoke. I wonder what the smoke would look like pulling a fifth wheel

True, unless there is a hardware fix...

The pollutant is Nitrous oxide (NOX), which in a diesel engine when the particulate emissions are reduced, tend to go up. There are several other auto manufacturers that are even worse than VW. They shouldn't have tried to cheat around the issue though. If you have a Diesel pusher motor home, some states require you to put an additive in your fuel tank to curb NOX, which I have been told can get a little expensive, and is one of the reasons we went with a gas engine in ours (at least to begin with).

I don't believe this will effect engines that run DEF. VW did not want to put DEF on there 2.0 engine, they saved 200 million by not having to install it(according to the article I read). In the same article it said the writer had talked to a Honda engineer and they could not figure out how VW could get the engine to pass the emissions without DEF.

Who cares about this issue. Most owners of diesels get tunes to disable the majority of that bogus emissions crap anyway. How many posting in this thread actually own diesels?
