OK lots of opinions.... I think we'll go by
Indy.

I do have a sunpass and an EZ pass so we're good with no stops at toll stations.

Maybe one day the states will actually cooperate and one transducer can work everywhere....

Not sure why the OP would want to go south to Paducah to then go north on 57.
Just take I64 west out of Louisville to I57 north, then to I74 west to I39 north

Wisconsin Dell via Paducah from Louisville??? You're joking I hope. You must read a map like my wife does.

Driving Chicagoland is not for the faint of heart, but it works for us! If you're skittish, definitely avoid it because otherwise you become a road hazard!

X2 Grumpy. Heading north to Minnesota from the South, I often take I57 to Champaign, IL; then west to Bloomington, IL on I74; then north on I39 to Rockford, IL to pick up I 90. Only one toll from that point. You will come out ahead time-wise by avoiding Chicago.

Go Pure Michigan!

Just drive around through Michigan.
It's a lot more scenic.
It's a lot safer.
People are nicer.
Gas is cheaper.
Food is better.
Mackinac Bridge Toll is $4.
And you can see the Northern Lights.
I may be biased....

As many have suggested indy to Blominton IL on I74 then I39 past rockford. One toll on I90 rockford to Wisconsin (toll for 2 axle plus two axle trailer matches a Semi Truck so avoid Chicago I294, I88 or your fuel budget will be cheap by comparison.). I39 TO Rockford is toll free only the short I90 toll to Wisconsin will catch you. EZ Pass or Ipass and I believe correct Florida transmitter work but cost is same as casb paying toll booth these days.(was discounted)
WISCONSIN avoid Friday's north past 50 mile swath of Madison or Sundays south bound ( That's Chicago to Dells traffic, what a nightmare.
US 51east of I90 by Madison or US 12 West of Madison are good bypasses should traffic be bad on I90. (I rarely use I90 at key traffic times in that area.) Towing a trailer at 65 on US routes will outrun the I90 traffic even with siteseeing some Wisconsin Cheese contry.
Enjoy but avoid the Chicago area at all cost unless you travel after midnight and like spending toll money.
I live on Toll Way I88 and avoid towing trailer at ALL COST on Tollway. The roads mentioned generaly in Illinois are a easy drive but some what wavier from the freeze thaw experience here.
HAVE A GREAT TRIP

KYDAN, Tom3205 is spot on. I drive the midwest most of the time in my semi and also in my motorhome. The construction from the IL line north is roughly 40-50 miles long but moves along pretty well with two lanes both directions. 65/465/74/39/90 to the Waterpark Of The World. Have fun!!!

All..These posts have been a lot of help as have been also contemplating best way around Chicago and other larger cities like Cleveland & Minneapolis (been already warned by a friend to avoid Chicago!). Planning return trip home pulling a 35' TT in early August to Calgary, Alberta, Canada from eastern Ontario via routing south of the Great Lakes and northwest via WI, MN, SD/ ND into Sask & Alberta. All of this region south of the lakes is new to us !
Looking at crossing into NY from Thousand Isles area south on I81 and working west on and off I90 to Ohio to 271 & I71. Pick up Hwy30 at Mansfield, OH to Fort Wayne, IN to 24 to I39/90/94 north to Madison, Minneapolis etc. Alternate would be to continue west on I80 to Des Moines to I35 north etc. or take one of the two lane highways north (e.g. perhaps 61 north up to La Crosse and west on I90).
Would appreciate any further comments or suggestions from local experts to the area as not wishing to stumble into problems. Do these routing sound OK?
Are the two way highways such Hwy 30 & 24 OK or best avoided with a 35' TT?
Thank you in advance for your input !

Someone mentioned Sky High Camping Resort in another discussion of my trip.

Sky High Camping Resort

I checked out their website and it looked good. I called yesterday to ask about availability and they said -between phone calls- it kept ringing- they were "wide open" on Sun-Wed when I plan to be there.
They apparently fill up on Fri-Sat with Chicago weekenders and empty out on Sunday.
This fits my plan perfectly.
And they give $10 off per day on days we plan to be there!

Your staying a little off the beaten path, that's a 25 minute ride north! Anyway we try to go at least once a year and stay at a place right in the Dells "Bonanza" but we also go Tuesday or Wed and leave by Sat morning because it gets to loud for us. The Dells is a place to visit tho - it's fun for all...check out other things in the area since your not in the Dells - like Devils head state park - you will have to pay to get in but if you like walking around it's something to see!
