Bug problem

We are planning a trip at the beginning of June to Mackinaw city Michigan and Sleeping Bear Dunes. We have been told the black flies and mosquitoes will haul you away. Does anyone know if that is true and are the bugs that bad that time of the year?

We were in Mackinaw City and the UP the end of June a couple of years ago. We did not notice any flies and few mosquitoes in Mackinaw City. While we were in the UP only noticed flies one time when we stopped moving at Pictured Rocks. We were right on the shoreline. Lots of mosquitoes however. We used a combination of Off and Thermocells to keep the buggers away. We use the lantern style and the portable style both.

Further south at the sand dunes near Ludington we didn’t have issues with bugs at all. That was end of June as well.

That area of Michigan is beautiful don’t let the possibility of bugs keep you away.

Who ever told you that does not know the difference between the UP and the lower peninsula and Canada. I have spend 43 years of my life all over the lower peninsula and never seen a black fly. Farther north yes. Mosiquoes and tics yes.

Nothing that would prevent you from camping or being outside without a fire and little bug spray

Mosquitoes especially are unavoidable that time of year. They are worst in the very forested campgrounds, or those near marshy areas, and not as bad in city parks. I don't like to use Deet repellent, but some of the non-chemical ones are fairly effective (e.g. lemon eucalyptus). My BEST advice is to get an electric bug swatter for when they get into your unit. They really do work. When I don't use it the walls of my trailer end up looking like a horror movie set.
