Campground near Kansas City (Steamboat Arabia)

We may make a trip to KC in mid-September. I really want to see the Steamboat Arabia Museum: Steamboat Arabia Museum

Are there any nice campgrounds nearby? Preferably quiet, wooded. Nothing fancy. It's just me and DH.

Try some of the state parks. Weston Bend is located in Weston MO, just a few minutes north of KC by I29. Weston also has 3 nice wineries if you are interested. Shaded but not wooded, but they do have nice walking trails that leads to an overlook of the Missouri River. To the northeast of KC about 20 min is Watkins Mill State park close to Kearney and Excelsior Spring close to I35 highway. If you want to stay in KC there is the Jackson County campgrounds, Longview, Lake Jacomo, and Blue Springs Lake. All county ran. Smithville lake has 3 campgrounds, they are COE but ran by Clay county. There is also Basswood in Platte City. Watkins Mill (one of my favorite) is pretty wooded but sites are electric only with water and dumpstation when you enter the park. Jackson county campgrounds have shade but not as private. Full hookups are in full sun.

I think the closest one to the area where you want to visit is at Worlds of Fun, most of the others are some miles away. There is also one out at Bonner Springs KS at I-70 and K7 Junction. Basswood is nice, we have stayed there, have great pizza at their office or delivered to your site.

Enjoy your trip.

Watkins Mill State Park

I really like Watkins Mill State Park, It's not very far from the Rivermarket, that's where the steamboat is at, and it's very wooded area, plus there is a museum. I don't think you can go wrong with that site.

The Steamboat Arabia is well worth the visit, very cool experience.

We have camped several times at the Jackson County Parks as they are so convenient for soccer games etc. I find them to be very reasonable, with nice walking trails at the Jacomo campground. If you want "full hook-up" they have an advantage.

Watkins Mill is on our short list for this fall.
