State parks are almost always cheaper, but also generally lack some of the amenities the private parks usually have, like sewer hookups and cable TV. We camp in Florida state parks almost every time we camp. They do have dump stations, as well. Randy

We're in the Chicago area as well. We just camped at the Starved Rock state park last weekend. Awesome time...Only thing to keep in mind is that at Illinois State parks alcohol is prohibited.
Don't ask if we behaved and followed that regulation!!
Athother decent privately own campground in that vicinity is Hickory Hollow in Utica. I find a nice resource for campground reviews is

I'd say come to Wisconsin state parks - many have electrical hook ups, dump stations, but dry camping is fine, too. Camping - WDNR If you get an annual park pass for $25 (I think non-WI resident is $35), daily rates are $12-15.

we camp in state or national parks. we spend most of our time hiking/biking and being outside. we have found the private parks we have stayed at don't have the miles of trails we like.
you need to try the Indiana Dunes State Park- very nice with lots of hiking trails and a nice beach
