Camping and fishing in Northern Minnesota

Hey everyone we have a question.

The last few years we have gone to Canada, Eagle Lake, to stay in a cabin and fish. It is always a ton of fun. We love the place we go, Deer Trail Lodge. Last year we bought our TT and really can't afford to do both plus why would we want to stay in a cabin when we haveour home on the road!

We have thought about finding someplace new up there that has the ability to park an RV but a lot of the places just park them in the field. We were want much more of a "camping" experience along with the fishing.

In terms of fishing...we stink! We went to Canada because anyone can catch fish there. We have been on the lake for days without seeing another boat so the fish have no idea what a hook is. The lodge takes such good care of us. Set us up with a boat, clean the fish, take us out if we need help, etc.

Is there any place in Minnesota that fits this bill. A camp ground that we can rent a boat for a week that will take care of us like a fishing lodge? Electric would be great but not absolutely required. We usually go up for a week. Any help would be appreciated.

Lots of great places in Northern MN. Are you looking for more remote or someplace with more tourist type activities? Many inexpensive public campgrounds but you will probably have to stay at a private resort to rent a boat.

There are a ton of options for what you are looking for. There are campgrounds but many are considered resorts with camping available. This summer will be our 3rd year in 3 different places in Northern MN doing the same trip you described. The Explore Minnesota website is a great tool to narrow down your search based upon what sort of options you are looking for, as there are many. I would suggest that you get to planning soon, as many places get booked up.

Up the Gunflint Trail (out of Grand Marais) is beautiful. Check out Golden Eagle and Nor'wester Lodge. We haven't stayed at the Eagle but we have stayed in a cabin at Nor'wester and it is a gorgeous location. Eagle looks to be great too.

Almost all MN resorts will loan you a canoe or row boat for nothing or very little and will rent you a small motor for the boat too.

Both places are SMALL so you'll be lucky if they aren't booked out already.

We have our favorite spot called Moose Track Adventures right outside of Ely, MN. It is a small resort with a handful of cabins and four campsites w/ water and electric only. But they are also an outfitter and have everything you would need to rent for a week for fishing. There is a private dock for the four campsites. Two are steps away from Farm Lake. I almost hate to tell people about it....
