Close Call on Interstate 70 in Missouri
My wife and I spent a wonderful week on Lake of the Ozarks and were on our way home this past Saturday pulling our Salem Hemisphere 282RK. We crested a hill in the right lane only to find two fire engines blocking both lanes of traffic and cars backed up. I was traveling 60 mph and vehicles behind me and in the left lane were doing 70+. I hit the breaks very hard. The ABS on my Ford worked great. The trailer breaks locked up and I could hear the tires squealing but they kept the trailer in line behind me.
The result...we got stopped about 30 feet from the rear bumper of the car in front of us. It was very scary. I was about to go to the shoulder but felt the truck and trailer slowing enough and knew we would stop in time.
I have no idea why there wasn't a police car before the crest giving people a warning of the closed road. I'm really surprised there wasn't another accident. We had to exit and detour so I never did see the cause. A lifeline helicopter lifted off from the highway so I certainly hope they are doing well.
That was a close call I don't care to repeat! Be careful out there.
