Favorites near Mt Rushmore

Planning a trip to Mt Rushmore for July 2018 and wonder what campgrounds are among the favorites. Also, we're coming from Syracuse NY area and we're looking for a campground near Chicago for a one night stay. Thanks for your suggestions.

If you don't mine a bit of a drive, Devil's Tower KOA over in eastern WY is great.

Palmer Gulch KOA is pretty nice. Between Hill City and Keystone.

We stayed at South Dakota Camping & Resort in the Black Hills at RafterJ. Nice place!

Rafter J Bar Ranch Campground is about the best quality campground you will find. It is a bit pricy, but is central to all the attractions, Mt Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Needles, and all the small senic towns in the area.
Been there 3 times and would go again when in the area. Oversize spots, super clean and friendly staff.
After there, if you want to see Devils Tower, there is really only one campground...Devils Tower KOA. It is less than 100 yards from the entrance to Devils Tower. It is the only campground within around 20 miles from the Tower.

But, it is clean, large spots, friendly staff. You can pretty much see the Tower from about 75% of the sights.
Devils Tower is a bit far to drive from Mt Rushmore area for just a day trip. It's dooable, but makes for a looong day.

Spent 10 days at Broken Arrow about 4 miles outside Custer, SD
Broken Arrow Horse Camp

Close to Custer State Park, Wind Cave, Mt Rushmore, etc. Lots of back roads, beautiful scenery. Campground owners on property, clean and friendly.

Enjoy your trip!

+1 on Rafter J-Bar Ranch. We stayed there in 2010 on our way home from a trip west. We were impressed by the campground, especially the wide open spaces.

Kemps kamp in keystone is a very nice private park. The 1880s train comes by every day. It is in a canyon with a stream running through it,Full hook ups and you can get picked up right at the park from many of the site seeing tours. http://www.kempskamp.com
