First Real Trip
we purchase our new Rv on June 28 2013 and finaly made our first real trip in it this last weekend. Wife, Daughter and mself took a 4 day weekend and Headed to San Marcos Tx. for some river toobing as its called in the area. We stayed at this place http://www.pecanpark.com/index.php This place stays packed due to the crowds wanting to tube the river so we were in the over flow section. No shade tree's but it was still a nice area with full hook ups, wi-fi and cable tv. the camp ground has plenty to do, like fresbie golf, horse shoes, volleyball, basket ball, indoor pool, The campgrounds are kept clean and the staff is friendly. The others campers on each sie of me were friendly,
The trip was relaxing and un-eventful. The camp grounds are close to town if you need extra supplies or the wife wants to hit up one of the 2 outlet malls. The river got pretty crowded around 2pm but still was a good time. The only thing that i wasnt happy about was the mpg of the Tv. the trip was 364 miles round trip and i avgeraged 8.9 mpg at 65mph, the freeway speed of i-10 is 75. The drive there and back is not flat its small rolling hills so the truck was having to work a little at times. The TV or TT was not loaded down none of the tanks had water in them. All in all it was a nice weekend and we plan on make more trips to the park. We are planning another trip at the end of Aug.

a couple more pic. The San Marcos river is spring fed and the water stays around 72 degree's in the summer and always has a good flow due to being spring fed

It looks like you had a great first trip and I hope you have many more. As for the MPG, welcome to the world of towing an RV.

I was wishing for better mpg since the TT is a small mini lite. we have already decided to not worry about it and enjoy the trips. i work for an airline and fly for free so for the longer distance short trips we will fly and rent a car and room.

I would think that the tires on your TT are rated for 65 MPH or less?
I have had Dodge 1500's with the 5.7 and I would not expect much better MPG.

I have towed six thousand miles with a 9 overall average. I budget for 8. Hauling 15.5K combined weight as I do down the road is not going to come cheap.

Yes its 65mph. I stayed between 60-65 with the exception of 75 to pass an 18 wheeler doing 55. Stopped 2 times on the way home and felt the tires both times

Hi Prothos,
We have a 2012 Ram 1500 4X4 w/5.7L hemi, 6sp auto, 3.55 gears and Michelen LTX AT2 tires and tonneau cove. We pull a 2013 FR Surveyor SP220 Sport that weighs 5000lbs loaded. In the quest for more power and mileage I did the following mods to my Ram; Vararam intake, Magnaflow 14" muffler and Bullydog Gt for Hemi tuner. I think I am close to 410-415 horsepower now and have plenty of power. The muffler isn't loud at all except under a real uphill and mileage solo now is 17 around town and 22-23 on the highway. Towing mileage, on the flats, went from 10 to 13 and I have gotten as high as 15 with a tailwind. I have about $800 in mods but feel they were well worth it.
Happy Camping!
Pete

I have thought about the exhaust and intake. Just kind of hate to make many mods on a 3 month old truck. I have the 3.92 rear end it better for towing but hurts on the mpg. Also have the six speed tran.

Pecan Park is one of our favorite CG along with Guadalupe River Resort in Kerrville. We plan on attending the Texas Frog Rally in October at Buckhorn Lake RV resort in Kerrville (another great CG) We get our best highway MPG at 60 MPH and prefer to travel no more than 300 miles a day, so the time difference between 60-65 is negligible.

I wish I could invite you to the FROG rally in Kerrville, TX, in October but they had reserved 50 sites and they gave an additional 15, but they all filled up fast. There is also to be a wine tour by bus provided by the RV park. I look forward to the rally and plan on going early and stay late.
