Fredericksburg, Texas

We going to be heading to Fredericksburg, Tx in a few days & will be staying in the area for several days. Any recommendations for places to eat, visit, etc. Thanks!

We live about an hour from Fredricksburg and go there frequently.

If you like wine, you are in a good spot. There are maybe 30 wineries in the area.

Also, the National Museum of the Pacific War is not to be missed. I have been through the museum maybe 3 times and always learn something new.

Restaurants are plentiful. Crossroads Salon and Steakhouse is good. Vaudeville is good for lunch. Sunset Grill is good hamburgers. High end dining would be Cabernet Grill which features wild game and wine pairings.

Have fun, lots to do and see.

Our daughter and her family took us there on the same trip as Luckenbach. Go to Luckenbach. But when in Fredericksburg go to Pedernales Brewing Company. Click image for larger version

My wife, sons, and I all enjoy the Friedhelm Inn for dinner. I get Rind Roulade each time. Its service is somewhat variable, though. Enchanted Rock is a very interesting State Park that you should visit. Lyndon Baines Johnson Ranch is about 30 minutes east. There is a bat cave / tunnel or something like that nearby that we have never tried but I would like to.

Enchanted Rock. Especially if you can still climb. The view from Enchanted Rock of the Hill Country is spectacular.

Don't forget Otto's restaurant. Excellent food. Also try the Buffalo Nickel Bar and Grill. My wife loves their Pocahontas salad. They have a great deal on wings on Wednesdays, I think. I'll give a second vote for the Cabernet Grill. The Navajo Grill is also pretty good. The brewery on Main serves good beer. We go there for lunch so I can have Scotch egg and bottle caps … and a brew. There's no shortage of places to eat.

There a multitude of wineries to visit and some have stores in town. There's a new brewery opened on the outskirts of town but I haven't visited it yet. Maybe in November when we go down there. There's a frontier/heritage museum on the west end of Main that I found interesting. The Nimitz Museum is always worth a visit.

As you can probably tell, we love Fredericksburg and go down there for a week in spring and the fall. A drive in the Hill Country is always beautiful.

Where are you going to stay while in Fredericksburg?

Look for road runners while driving. They look surprisingly like the REAL Road Runner. My best description of them is a cross between a mockingbird and a chicken. And they are surprisingly fast. (Don’t forget your Acme Rocket Skates.)

Here's another recommendation for Freidhelm's Bavarian Inn - although we go at lunch most often. We eat at the Old German Bakery and Restaurant especially for breakfast. We hit the Fredericksburg Pie Company now and then but don't wait until 3 p.m. or they may be out of goods! We've had some pretty good fish at Catfish Haven. Check out Wildseed Farms to see what's blooming! ... and there might even be a Trades Day event happening across the street.

We appreciate all of your recommendations - sounds like everyone loves this place. We're going to be staying at the Fredericksburg RV Park on Highway str. They were the 1st park I called & they seemed very nice on the phone and they were able to find us a site, so we're looking forward to the trip from NC.

Why are you not signed up for the FROG Rally in Kerrville, just down the road there?

Originally we were planning to stay in the New Braunfels area, but I didn't see a campground I liked, so I started looking at the map again & saw Fredericksburg. I wasn't aware of the FROG rally, but I found out about the Octoberfest when I was making my reservation. Should have known: October+ German community = Octoberfest. Our schedule has recently become more flexible & this will be our first cross country trip. We're looking forward to getting to the hill country & spending some time there.

If Willie is there I’m sure you’ll see him. If you see Waylon there you’ve been “hanging out” with Willie too long. ;-)
