Getting past El Paso

We’re going I-10 toward Tucson from Midland, TX. I have heard bad stuff about I-10 through and I-375 over the mountains at El Paso. Does anyone have information about this. Maybe a good route around. I should have asked days ago. We’re going through/by/around tomorrow. Thanks for any help.

I have travelled that route many times.
This time of year you may hit winds and snow on the pass between NM and AZ.
Other than that you should have no problems. Roads a good.

68 whiskey are you choosing transmountain/loop 375 or I10?

I am from El Paso and live near us54 and i10 close to kenworthy and us54.
What’s your rig like and I will say depending your route i10 does have traffic through El Paso but if you stay not in the extreme left but the one next to it and keep speed which the limit is 60mph you will be good all the way to las cruces. If you choose loop 375 it does have a good descent and the final elevation is around 5500 ft above sea level. Plus based on weather could potentially have snow or ice. If you take loop 375 from i10 you can take us 54 north exit kenworthy and turn left on Martin Luther king Blvd this is a nice route not a bad one and drive approx 5-8 miles and turn left on Anthony gap this will also put you back on i10 west but without the significant grades. I use a half ton and pull a 40ft fifth wheel to give you aspects.. but definitely google Anthony gap to I 10.

Miss my home town !!!!!

Hey guys. Thanks for getting back with me. I talked to some locals here since I posted this, and Blender you are spot on. Thanks for the advice. You are now the 3rd person to advise this route. This is the way we will be going tomorrow. Thanks to all for your help. I will follow up on this to help someone else. Happy trails.

I grew up in El Paso, it has changed a lot since I left in the early 80's. We still travel there for family but they are all in Cruces and Ruidoso now.

If it was me I'd do 1 of 2 things;
Take I-10, have Google maps open and check traffic long before getting to El Paso.
Take 375 to 54 to MLK/3255 up to 404 and go across and catch I-10 again.

If you're going to spend the night, Cruces is a great place. We stay at Sunny Acres when we are there for several days, it's a little ways of I-10. I might suggest the Hacienda RV Park for just the night it's right off I-10.
Then go into Old Mesilla and eat at La Posta wonderful mexican food.

Great info. Thanks Dk we plan to go that way and look for the places you mentioned. Looking forward to some good Mexican food. Had some last night at Chuys in Van Horn. But it just got me warmed up.

I would have suggested Chopes but they are closed Sunday and Monday.

I-10 through El Paso

Stay in the #2 lane, behind the big rigs, and blow through town. If you fuel in Deming NM, you can get to Vanhorn just fine (or the opposite, going west). Avoid going through at rush hours, but any other time, you should be able to pretty much breeze through. Huge rest area, east bound, just after the Texas state line, and a nice Rest Stop in NM, just after passing out of Texas, westbound.

We have passed thru El Paso three times this year. Recommend you just stay on I-10. There are no elevation problems. Traffic can be heavy but it moves well. Stay out of the far right lane.

We just went around on 375 a month ago and I would highly recommend it. I wasn't towing this trip but will be in the spring and will use that route.

Follow up: We came through or rather around El Paso today (North I-10 from Van Horn) and the route that I was given was terrific. There was only one time getting off 375 onto 54 that was somewhat tight, but we negotiated it well. I highly recommend this route for anyone interested. You bypass the mountain and the mess in El Paso. Thanks to all for the input, especially Blender and DKRitter. Guys, I just regret not being able to stop and get the food and stay over there. We’ll do that on another trip. Safe travels and Happy Trails.
