Good Sam discount at Pilot Flying J

I hope I am the only one who has encountered the issues I have had the last two days at Pilot Flying J when getting fuel. I have been trying to use my Good Sam membership to get the discount and it has been a less than satisfactory experience. In one instance the clerk turned on the wrong pump. Luckily I alerted the staff in time so the "other guy" didn't fill his tank on my nickel. The next time was in Amarillo, TX. The clerk held the discount card and the credit card but didn't turn on the pump. I used a different card to get the pump to work. In addition, the pump station was charging $0.10 per gallon more than they were advertising on their sign. I wasn't that big on a deal because we were just fueling our CR-v but there is a principle involved.

I think that Good Sam should vet the companies that they "partner" with to make sure the "partner" has a adequate training program for their staff.

Off I95 in South Carolina we stopped at Flying J . GS card would not work so I went inside. Clerk turned on the pump and I filled up. Back inside, the card gave me the discount but would not accept the charge. I paid on my Discover so got GS discount and Discover rebate--- no complaints here!!!

I just swipe the the credit card then the discount card right at the pump, get my discount.. Fill and go. I use the rv lanes and car lanes. If I use the trucker lanes I need to go in since I do jot have a fleet card. No big deal. I'll take whatever discount I can get.

Pilot Flyin J is 30 cents more per gallon, so I try not to get gas there unless I am desperate. At least that's the way it is here in Michigan, 2.65 by my house 2.99 there.

I won't use Pilot or Flying J unless it is the only diesel station around for 50 miles and I need fuel. Most diesel fuel that they sell is overprice and contains up-wards of B20 diesel fuel which my truck can not use. This is do to the emission equipment that the EPA has mandated. I can only use up to B5 fuel per the owners manual.

The other issue with B20 is less MPG due to less energy content of the fuel. So the over all fuel cost will be higher in comparison to good old D2 fuel when used.

Oh I will shop around as well. Use the GasBuddy App. If the J is cheaper I hit it up if not I move on to the next cheapest.

Scott, From recent travel experience MI is CRAZY expensive for gas or diesel! We saw almost a 30¢ a gallon drop in prices right across the OH border before Toledo. And the prices just keep dropping the further south you go!

FYI here in Huntsville Gas is $2.27, Diesel $2.59 - probably be a bit higher in the Nashville area so top off well north of the city - what route are you taking BTW?

YES! Gassbuddy is your best friend!

Also if you are a COSTCO or Sams Member they usually have the best prices

If you are a GS Member AND have the Pilot Fuel CC, you save 10¢ a gallon at Pilot/Flying J

Flying J discounts(?)

In Tulsa and their stations between here and Iowa, Flying J is 6 to 10 cents higher than all nearby diesel suppliers. Other Tulsa fuel is 2.35 to 2.39, ash or credit, they're 2.49 cash and higher if using credit card.
Before Flying J and Pilot merged, the discount was real, plus, your 6th coffee was free. They merged and all goodies went out the window.
Have written Good Sam twice about this so called discount but they don't respond.

Pilot and Flying J

We were out on a 30+ day trip from Texas to the west and northwest and only encountered one Flying J where I couldn't get my GS card to scan at the pump. Went inside and the clerk took care of it, no problem. We stop at both Pilot and Flying J whenever possible as their prices are usually about the same or less than the competitors. Sounds like you had a couple of stations that were not well managed or maintained. We like the RV pumps out front and we can always get in and out easily.

I've had GS membership since FOREVER!! I re-upped it in December 2014, good till May 2018. Jan., Feb, March & April could not do anything with GS on the Internet, they kept saying I was expired. When we got home from Snowbirding I called them on the phone many times, still no satisfaction. "We are having trouble with the computer system" - So that also meant "no satisfaction" at the pumps. DH had to go inside to use the card. I'm shocked it even worked in there!! Also I could only get the "free magazine" on the internet (couldn't figure that one out!!) but I like the real deal coming in the mail. Finally got my first magazine in the mail in July! They need to clean house at that place, UNBELIEVEABLE!!

Flying J was A BUST!

I just came back from a 21 day RV trip where we left Texas, went through Colorado, Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, S. Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, then back to Texas. I TRIED to use Flying J on at least 5 occasions and at each event it was MUCH more of a hassle than it was worth. Additionally, I did NOT receive the promised discount (as a Life Member) and the clerks could not fix it. I thought maybe it would show up on the bill...However, I just got the bill and it did not. This was a VERY poor experience and sadly was very consistent. At one location I had to go inside because the card reader would not work, they had no idea what the Good Sam Card was and no idea what to do. This was not the experience I had anticipated and I will no longer even try to go out of my way to deal with Pilot/Flying J. I agree that Good Sam ought to audit this issue and either solve the problem or sever the association. Clearly we are not getting either the service OR the price that was promised---both of which are used to sell the membership.

I have NEVER purchased from Flying J! They always seem to be more expensive than the prevailing rate in the local areas and the "discount" offered through my Good Sam card only brings them closer to the others around the area.

As others have mentioned, I use the Gas Buddy app all the time and ALWAYS beat the Flying J prices.

We've got the Pilot/Flying J charge card and use it exclusively when traveling here in the southeast. I've never seen their prices get beat. Only had one issue and that was when a pump was broken and I went inside to pay. It didn't give me the discount but a quick email to Pilot got our account adjusted immediately. My experiences have all been east of Fort Worth and south of Branson, so not sure about other areas. For now, they're the only place I use for the RV. Possibly the problem is Good Sam instead of Pilot?

In regards to them selling the fuel for 10 cents more than displayed...Be Careful. A lot of stations will advertise and display fuel at a certain price but if you look, in small print somewhere near the price it may sat "Cash Price".

Here in states surrounding and including Kansas ... I never us Pilot or Flying Flip J's as their fuel is way higher than surrounding stations. Like at Emporia, you can nearly see a Phillips station just down the road for always 15 - 20 cents a gallon cheaper. That 10 cents a gallon discount if you manage to get it doesn't add up ... the Flying Flip J diners are sub-par ... and the incedentials part of the store is way overpriced.
