Kids Spring Break Trip

I am picking up out new Roo 233S on Tuesday and looking for a good trip idea for the kids Spring Break. We live in the suburbs of Chicago and would like to go somewhere warmer but somewhat close. Does anyone have a good suggestion?

Don't want to sound bad, but.... these are questions and ideas that should have been thought of last Sept-Oct.... Going to any beach or 'warm' area, you will need reservations months in advance to know that you have 'a spot'.

Remember that in years to come.... no disrespect intended. If going to the beaches on the east coast or gulf, plan way in advance.

Your new Roo will have a few bugs (all do in some respect, so, go through and test it before you leave on your trip)

I would suggest looking at Branson Missouri for this SpringBreak. The State Parks is good place to start as everything should be open. There are a lot of Full service campgrounds that will be open, so go on line and look at those and a large variety of things and shows and shopping to do. 'Silver Dollar City' is open on a reduced schedule, look up the days open. Several years ago, we took "Timeshare" tours (go fast through the tours and keep them short and don't buy anything) and received free tickets to several shows..... look online for coupons and show dates that may be open.

The Florida panhandle should be warm by spring break or southern MS or AL. You might find some parks full, but I’m sure you can find something!

What kind of place do you like?

he said "BUT, somewhat close"... sounds like the more important part to me...

though, admittedly, when someone posts a 'generic' request like this, do ANY OF US know what 'warmer' and 'somewhat close' REALLY mean to the poster? Prob not.

it's all subjective

Chicago, close and warm. I'd just stay inside.

I bet the kids don't really care, but DAD wants a getaway!

(somewhere 'warmer' and 'somewhat close', anyway...)

SpringBreak for a lot of schools is around the end of March. How warm is Lake Michigan at the end of March. Being from Mizzouri, I have never made too many plans for SpringBreak above the Mason-Dixon Line.... because of the cold. Should I rethink that?

It's a great park, we have a week in June. Make sure you make reservations to eat at College of the Ozarks, Ketter Center. You will love it.

Mammoth cave is about 400 miles from you, and inside the cave is the same year round. If Spring Break is cold, there are multiple explorations within the cave. If Spring Break is warm, there are also nice state parks near by.

Many years ago we took our pop-top there for a family vacation. We also took the kids' bikes so they could ride around the campground and state park.

As a first major outing, 400 miles may be far enough.

We took our two college kids to Hatteras KOA for spring break last year. Put them in wet suits with boogie boards and had a cozy fire in the evenings. They both had a great time. The lesson is; take what you can get and make your own fun.

We will be there at the same time, same park, full hook ups, loop one. We have stayed at this park many times over the years. Get a map of the area and brochures from the park office. During heavy tourist season, hiway 76, that goes East and West is a parking lot. Have local maps (you can get them at many places) to show you the north/south direction streets and there are also 'loop' roads that help by-pass hiway 76. There are a lot of things to do, so go online was look at the high profile shows, but also know that there are many 'hole-in-the-wall' places that are really interesting. At the bottom of the Table Rock Dam is the 'Shepard of The Hills' State Park Hatchery that may interest you. This time of year is still 'off season', so the crowds should not be bad at all for any thing that you do.

Silver Dollar City is an all day affair. That is where Marvel Cave is.

Another option is Kentucky. The Kentucky Horse Park outside Lexington is a nice place to visit for a few days. Lots of interesting stuff to do that is nearby - Pleasant Hill Shaker site is extremely interesting...

Brown county, Indiana is one of our favorite spring trips. They are a little soyht as and in a nice valley. Great state parks and plenty to see and do. Close to Nashville Indiana and Bloomington with Indiana university.

If your kids are 10 or under, stop in downtown St. Louis and check out the City Museum. Kids will love it. There is an in-town campground right down the street.

If you do that, the St Louis Zoo is both terrific and free.

There is a parking fee per vehicle. Do not even think about pulling a camper into the area of the zoo. Traffic... bad.... streets around zoo, some narrow and congested.
