Pancake Bay, Provincial State Park

Westbound after Pancake Bay, you will see cars parked along the road. Stop and walk through the woods about 2 blocks to beautiful Caribean water and rocks to swim out to. As the locals at a (or the) restaurant in Pancake Bay.

Grand Marais, Gunflint Trail up to the Gunflint Lodge for Shore lunch. Also Angry trout Cafe in grand Marais on a warm summer evening.

Rossport, a definite stop

From the Sault, north along Lake Superior, the best! Any provincial park along the way will be good but really love Pancake Bay, just out of SSM. You will need to book ahead for good spot. Another fav of ours is Rossport. Campground right on the edge of Lake Superior. The town has a few great gift shops and a restaurant called Serendipity, which is always a must for us.
Blueberries behind the showerhouse!! The vistas along this area are breathtaking. In Thunder Bay, the Old Fort (Ft Wm Historical Park) has a campground, or just before entering the city on Hwy 17 is a KOA. Lots of families love the activities and swimming pool. After leaving TBay, another great lakeside drive after going thru the border to Grand Marais, which is 40 minutes away. Their Municipal campground is great. You can walk into town for dinner/shopping, but you should likely book a spot because they are busy in the summer. You are going to love this trip!!! Enjoy!

In Houghton, try Roy's Pasties on the waterfront. They're AWESOME!

Then try a Tostada pizza at the Ambassador Restaurant. One of a kind!

The Ontario Provincial Parks along Lake Superior (and Lake Huron) are excellent. Beautiful views at all the ones on the lake. Well organized and laid out. Good reservation system where you can see each site (for most campgrounds as I recall).

The MN State Parks along the North Shore are also good. Many beautiful waterfalls to see along that route. Some you can see at the parks, some you can just stop to explore along the highway. Expect heavy traffic on summer weekends. Don't expect to "make time" on Highway 61!

Pancake Bay is spectacular! Don't miss the short hike up to the unbelievable view point!

Angry Trout - seconded! Leave some time to slow down and enjoy the lake view there too.

Gunflint Trail is beautiful but it is an area of its own to explore. It's a long drive out and back, depending of course on how far you go. There are a few private resorts to stay at but chances of getting spots now are slim. Call ahead.

http://www.golden-eagle.com/ They have - count them - nine campsites.

NorWester Lodge - nice place. They have a few camping sites. https://norwesterlodge.com/lakeside-rv-sites/

A few more if you use Google Maps searching "RV Gunflint Trail" Mostly a cabin and tent kind of area though.

A couple more suggestions.
1. In L'Anse stop at the Hilltop Restaurant. Good food and AWSOME 1lb Cinnamon Rolls. I know folks who will drive from Mackinaw just to get them.
2. Near L'Anse is Mt Arvon, the highest point in Michigan. When I was there a few years back, the walk from where I parked wasn't all that stressful. Not sure how much an issue driving close would be in a class C though.

All thru the area are lots of waterfalls.

A somewhat odd-ball stop is the worlds largest gemstone in Ishpeming:

Jasper Knob is commonly known as the “World’s Largest Gemstone”. The formation is a 1.874 billion-year-old rock outcrop in the city of Ishpeming, Michigan, and is accessible by a foot trail. Please park on the north side of the road near the intersection of Hill and Jasper streets. Enter the trail using the steps through the wall of stone. A common misconception of the area is that a local mining company owns it. In fact, the property is owned by the city of Ishpeming.

The world’s largest gemstone is a banded iron formation (BIF) that is comprised of jaspilite, which consists of alternating bands of jasper (a cryptocrystalline quartz), red hematite, and silvery-gray specular hematite. This type of iron ore is not profitable for mining because the iron content is only about 40%. Thus, this beautiful example of natural occurring gemstone is preserved for all to visit and admire.

Traveling in the opposite ( clock wise )direction through Ontario is much more scenic . The panoramic views are fantastic and in front of you as opposed to behind you travelling counter clock wise .

If you go into soo ste marie michigan and take in the locks continue east on the road that paralells the locks and look on the rightside of the road for the ANTELERS BAR. They are famous for their Paul Bunyon burger. The rustic deco in the place is something to behold. Its a family place to eat. If you stop theremake sure you take a healthy appetite. I lived there for five years.

Lake Superior Circle Tour

Must see in Canada is the Terry Fox Memorial on the Trans-Canada hwy just out side of Thunder Bay. You'll have a view of Lake Superior and the Sleeping Giant. Just the drive along Hwy 17 from the Sault Ste Marie to Wawa and Thunder Bay is awesome.
