Lancaster, PA to Williamsburg, VA

We will be in the Lancaster, PA area in August this year and would really appreciate any advice on the best route to Williamsburg, VA.

Thanks,
Mick

I would take 83, 695, 95, 64....but avoid rush hours and don't travel 95 on Thursday or Friday.

I would not do the Baltimore or DC stuff. I'd take I83 or US30 over to I81, then 81S through MD, WV, and into VA. Then take I66E towards DC, but then cut off onto US17S. You avoid all of Philly, Newark, Baltimore, and DC. 17 dumps you out onto I95 south of DC at Fredricksburg. Then it's right down I95S to Richmond and onto Williamsburg. All nice towing, a few lights on 17 but it's all 4 lane, limited access highway. Not sure what the road is like between Richmond and Williamsburg though. Good luck!

This is what I'd do.

If you time Baltimore and DC right, even Thursday or Friday are bearable.

Head southwest to Interstate 81 south to Interstate 64 and go east to Williamsburg. Much simpler. Go to google.maps.com and you will see.

Another thought (which admittedly still subjects you to Baltimore traffic) is 83S to 695W/S to 97S to Rt 3, which will merge/turn into Rt 301. Follow 301 down through Southern MD, across the Potomac to Rt 30E.

If you're not on traveling on a weekend, you also take 301 down to 295 around Richmond and East to 64E to Williamsburg as it's not that bad. I95 in VA is bad almost anytime except for late/early in my experience.

We live just west of Baltimore and used this exact route (with 30E) in 2012 on Labor Day Friday to go to Williamsburg. Very easy drive, definitely a few lights on 301, but no where near the stress of stop and go on 95.

Getting over to I81 seems to be out of the way, but as long as you enjoy the drive, who cares! Have fun!

I agree withroyboy334. I have driven this route north and south hundreds of time and avoid Baltimore, DC area like the plague unless its 2:30 am.
