Luckiest Day Ever

Hwy 39 in New Mexico has a 20 mile stretch which they post as a rough road. After bouncing along at a slow speed we emerged onto relatively smooth pavement. Suddenly, I feel a strong jolt to the rv! I look in the rear camera and my toad Jeep is loose!! I freak out. My daughter says she has never heard so many "oh sh^€" words out of my mouth. I begin to slow and the Jeep has moved into the oncoming lane on a narrow highway with no shoulders. It begins to nudge the left rear of the rv and then slows down. The tow bar has come loose and is digging into the pavement with sparks flying. I get the rv on the non existent grass shoulder and the Jeep stopsin the road. Thank god there is no traffic in this desolate part of the world. Turns out the bolt and pin holding the tow bar are gone. They were fine upon departure. Both safety cables are snapped. Thank god no one was hit by my Jeep! Also, the Jeep is running and towing great. The folks at the two stores in Springer NM were very helpful in getting me set up with grade 8 bolts, lock washers, and heavy chain for safety cables. The bad news is I have damage to the RV and Jeep (see picts). The road was extremely rough as I also had to reset the generator and invertor breakers when I got to my campsite. My DW asked if this would ruin our trip and I said no way! I'm relieved no one was hurt and my Jeep is stiil in pretty good shape.

Wow, now that is lucky!

Your "My DW asked if This would ruin our trip and said no way!" reminded me of a quote from James Glasgow Farragut.

I'd say you sure were lucky. The way the roads are getting today it's a wonder more folks do not have problems. It's to the point of becoming dangerous to drive on the interstates. Later RJD

You mentioned that the bolt and pin holding the tow bar were missing.

I'm not sure about others, but any tow bar or hitch that attaches to my rig is secured by a receiver lock

Master Lock 5/8-inch Stainless Steel Receiver Lock | Canadian Tire

as opposed to something like this

Master Lock Universal Receiver Pin and Clip | Canadian Tire

If it's not locked onto my rig, anyone can remove the receiver shaft and move it to their rig/truck.

Plus...........they're strong!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Glad no one was hurt and no major damage. If New Mexico has a lottery buy a ticket today.
