Glad I stumbled onto this thread. We driving through the UP on our way home from MN in 2 weeks. We were looking for a CG around Munising. Glad you recommended this one - I hadn't come across it in my search.

Looking forward to it - only wish we had a few more days to explore. Work sure cuts into camping time...

I really like the Mackinaw Mill Campground. Private, but beautiful! Mile or so of beach, views of the Island and the bridge, nice heated pool and shuttles to the ferries. Also, arcade for kids' rainy days!

In the U.P., don't miss the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore and the sightseeing there...lots of waterfalls and beaches in addition to the pictured rocks. Absolutely breathtaking area!

I'll second the Munising Tourist Park on the west side of town. (and west side of the c/g! ) That's were i woke up the FIRST day of retirement back in 07. We try to make it up there around Columbus day. Have the place nearly to ourselves! Glass bottom boat is excellent as well as the pictured rocks tours. (and if you saw my earlier post and whitefish addiction... the whitefish @ Sydney's is GREAT! Breakfast too!)

Make sure and plan some time along the way to hit Whitefish Point & the Shipwreck Museum. Great place this time of year!

Hope you brought your sweats! It's been cool up there this week!

elind, you might try the Castle Rock CG just 3 miles north of St. Ignace. A Good Sam park and we just spent a week there and just lovely.

Got it - whitefish sounds awesome - will try that for sure. Shipwreck museum and glass bottom boat tour both look very interesting too.

And I did a double take when I saw the weather link on the CG website. It is still August, right? Think I'll go for sweats X2. Looks like we won't need the AC.

Not sure how much we can squeeze in while in the UP, but we'll get a list going for a return trip. Promised DS we would spend 2 days at the Ford museum in Dearborn. He really wants to tour the F-150 assembly plant and see all of the different exhibits.

Thanks for the tips!

I have thought a lot about staying there, but we always wind up at Timberridge there because there is a bunch for the Granddaughter to do. The state park is always way too crowded.

I'm going to watch the F.R.O.G. web site the first of the year and be like Phrank. Hit the button at midnight for Goshen 2014. That way i can get into the Elite 400, away from the choo-choos.
Plus everyone else will be trying to get in with the techs coming down to work.

Pancho's Pond in Ludington is nice and in the center of the state at Durand, near Flint is Holiday Shores Campground.

We stayed at the Mackinaw Mill Creek Campground. We got a super saver site for $16.00 per nite. If you go to the island, wait and get your ferry tickets at the dock and get a combination package to include the ferry trip, a narrated carriage ride around the island, and a tour of Ft. Mackinac. We thoroughly enjoyed it. Tours of Grand Hotel are an extra $10.

From Mackinaw city we traveled to Tahquamenon Falls SP in the UP. While there be sure to see the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum at Whitefish Point. We then went to Harris, MI and now are in Minocqua, WI. Be sure to always check out the Corps of Engineers parks. I forgot to look before we got here and there is one in the area on the lake.

Thanks for the tips. The recommendations for the Munising Tourist Park were right on - unfortunatley the park was full and we couldn't get in, but we drove by and it was beautiful. Ended up staying up the road at Wandering Wheels. Sites were nice, and the place has potential, but boy, talk about "deferred maintenance!" Place needs some work. Didn't get a chance to do the shipwreck museum either. But we really enjoyed the shore along Superior and Michigan, so we are planning a return trip. We can meet our friends from MN since that is about the half way point and spend some time enjoying. The Henry Ford was also incredible. Other than the Smithsonian, I don't where else you could find a collection of American history like that.

Thanks again for the info.
