The is the Walton resort in Hartland above Howell. There are others close to there. Oak Grove I think. It's been a couple of years.

Frankenmuth, Mi. is a great place to visit if you like everything German. (beer, food, architecture etc.)

Michigan is close to Goshen...so you might want to try to work the Frog Rally into your plans.

The absolute closest that I know about is on my side of the border, Windsor Campground. But as others have said Algonac might be the better option for you. Farther away but offset by the unpredictability of possible delays at the border.

You'll have to let me know when you're planning to be in town and I'll see about arranging a weekend where ever you're staying at.

We stay at Proud Lake SP when ever a shopping trip to Detroit is called for. It is a nice park and a little closer than Algonac, but if you are any kind of Boat Nerd at all, Algonac SP is the best spot to watch the big lake freighters, Try to get a site that backs up to the river.

I've been wanting to try out Harbortown. It looks like a nice park.

Last time I was at Sterling was about 30+ years ago and I wasn't impressed back then, but I've been tempted to go back because it's one of the few State Parks that offers full hookups.

I recently have totally given up on Michigan State Parks. The reservation system is a joke and it's impossible to get into the 'popular parks', plus our rig as really too big for many of them anyway.

We spend most of our time on the west coast of the lower peninsula, from Holland to Traverse City. The west side is very beautiful.

We have plans at several private RV resorts this summer including:

Ponchos Pond in Ludington A+
Silver Creek in silver lake (we run our trucks in the dunes too)
River Ridge in Stanwood
Hidden Ridge in Hopkins (only 20 minutes away from home, but nice)
Traverse Bay in Traverse City A++

Yes, the RV resorts are more expensive, but very clean and FULL hookups.
Let me know if you need more info on these options.

I have been online with the Michigan parks and I have come to the conclusion that we will be better off at the private parks. Thanks for your input.

Poncho's pond --Great!
Silver Creek --Great!
Petosky KOA --Great!
Harbor Town --Very Nice
Sterling State Park --Very Nice
Proud Lake State Park --OK

Of course, the first three are expensive, though not as expensive as camping in the NE US.

Not sure how long it has been since you visited the Michigan State Park online system, but the new interactive campground maps have pretty accurate discriptions with photos of the actual lot.

It took us 3 days to travel from Austin Tecxas to Holly Michigan. We stayed at a KOA camp ground in Holly, the water was rust and they had a honey wagon drain the gray tank twice weekly and the black once a week. I don't recommend this camp ground. Also had our truck keyed in two spots and customer service was not on their list. You have to pay for any activity in the park. The worst camp ground we have stayed at so far. We full time

There's a reason for that.
Grand Haven is very nice, but the SP is just a parking lot on the beach with hardly enough room for your room slides, let alone your awning. Some people love it, but I'm not interested in camping on top of my neighbor. I wouldn't consider it for my equipment.
Great place to visit though.

I agree, that KOA is the worst in the state, it used to be a Jellystone park years ago. We stay at the state park at the Holly Recreation area about 4 or 5 miles from there

Their is a little ma&pa CG on the other side of town. We couldn't get in to GH state park early so we stayed their till our reservations. Lots of shade, speed strictly enforced, they even let you park straight in if you want to share awnings with family/friends. I think its just off the main track through town, You enter behind a car dealership. Just follow the road around.

Our home park Outdoor Adventures just bought a park there that we can stay at for free. We are planning on going over there this year. It used to be the Jellystone Grand haven, then it was Grand Haven Campground, now Outdoor Adventures I guess they have putt putt golf, go karts and pools for the kids. We will give it a try since the price is right

Here is my home park with 7 locations in Michigan. I pay my 396.00 per year after I bought my membership and I can stay 3 weeks at a time with one week out. We do this most of the summer
