Monahans Sandhills State Park
My nephew is getting married in the mountains of southern New Mexico this summer so we are going to Las Cruces and see if we can OD on mexican food for a few days.
We will need to stop between DFW and NM and thought we'd try Monahans Sandhills State Park, has anyone ever stayed there looks like a little bit of fun.
Thanks

We stayed there one night. We reserved a spot, but for some reason I don't remember, we failed to either pay a fee at the time or something else. We were able to work it out at check in.
They were not kidding when they called it "Sandhills" as Thats about all we saw there. There may be more to the park, but that's all we saw of it.
Also - all the parking spots we saw, including ours, were located parallel to the road, unlike what you might expect. No problem, just different.

Kinda what I figured. From Google Maps it looks like a 2 lane road with some wide places for spots. It is almost in the middle of a 650 mile drive and with it being $15.00 it looked like a good place for the night compared to staying someplace along the interstate.
We have had real good luck with Texas State Parks

Yep - we left Keller on our way to Northern California, stayed overnight in Clyde (20 miles East of Abilene) at a nice little park, then on to Monohans. A relatively short run,but Monahans looked interesting.
Let us know what you think about it if you stay there.

If you're talking to me,Yes I have been there, but not in a RV. And BTW, I believe that Canyon is one of the best kept secret cities in the panhandle.
If you're talking to the OP,I don't know about him,but he's heading South and West on his trip and PDC is North.

This website has some pictures of the campsites. I've been there many times growing up but have not camped there since 1985.

True - but that sand is so fine, that even with closed windows,if the wind is blowing strong enought it still gets in.

I was raised in Odessa so I've been to the sand hills a lot. I bought my first camper in the 1980, a cab over camper with no AC. The first place I camped was at Monahan's State Park in August. Unlike Katy, when the sun goes down so does the temperature. It was 92 at 7PM and 68 at 7AM. A very nice campout.
The first time I go a little money together I install a 13,000 BTU AC in that camper, way more than I needed. I could hang meat in there in July.

We stayed there January 25, 2015, and our site was a back-in one (not parallel to the road). We were lucky the wind was calm ... I think it would be ugly if it was windy!

All of this is where I grew up, born in El Paso so the desert is a bit of home to me and went to school at what was then WTSU in Canyon. I actually worked one summer in Palo Duro in an internship, an amazingly beautiful place.
These little spots on the road are what it's all about.

I was just through there on my way to and from Phoenix. The weather stranded me at Van Horn for one night. I stayed at Mountain View RV Park and I have to say it was one of the better maintained parks I've been in. Every site is pull-through and level. The price was reasonable, too. The restrooms/showers were cleaner than most hotels I've stayed in.
Enjoy Las Cruces... I've always liked it there.

We stayed there last winter for three nights - could hardly go out the first afternoon and next day due to the wind blowing the sand around so much. Then really enjoyed the following day and hated to leave. Would return again if in that area.
