Mt Rushmore

Looking for recommendations for a place to camp near Mt Rushmore. Planing on a week to ten days in that area this spring or summer. Also would like a recommendation on where to stay near St Paul MN for a week or so.

We are staying in that area for 2 days in August. I booked at Fort Welikit Campground, honestly I have never stayed there but from my research it seemed like a good CG. It is about 30 minutes from MT Rushmore...

I have camped at Custer State Park several times in a 22' trailer. They have several campgrounds to choose from. You can check out the campsites at campsitephotos.com before you reserve a site.
Be sure to drive the Needles Highway while you are in the area. One tunnel on the highway frames Mt Rushmore in the distance.

Crooked Creek Resort just south of Hill City. Real close to Mt Rushmore. Have stayed there the past 7 years.

Hard to beat Rafter J. Another nice small campground is Big Pine in Custer. Big pine is great if you don't want to be around a lot of kids, they don't have swimming pool just nice campsites in the tall pines. We took our family and friends to Rafter J two years ago and got four sites on the Island and had a great time, lots of things to do for kids and very close to all attractions.

If you like wilderness, Custer State Park is wonderful, make sure to drive the wildlife loop.
If you want comfort, the KOA Mt Rushmore is nice (I have dumped there and tent camped there).

Stay away from the KOA unless you like being around a lot of people with kids running around all day. The campground needs updated bad. Many uneven gravel spots, ours wasn't big enough for the truck and trailer. Site drain very poorly after a rain too.

DW and I spent a week at Horsethief Lake Campground in the Black Hills National Forest. Only 2 miles from Mt. Rushmore and very convenient to the entire area. They are non-electric sites as are most National Forest sites, (which we prefer). A lot less crowded and peaceful. So much to do in the area so we spent very little time at the campsite. Was also very convenient to tour Mt. Rushmore during the day and then make it back for the night presentation, included in the daily price of admission and NOT to be missed. FANTASTIC! After the night presentation we were back at our campsite within minutes while everybody else was fighting traffic all the way back to town, etc. Definitely staying again at our next visit. We were there after the Sturgis Rally in Mid August.

Stayed in Happy Holiday CG on HWY 16 just out of Rapid City.

Not a bad place, Reptile Gardens right across the road, the girls were not interested...
