Mt Rushmore

Going from DFW area to Mt Rushmore area in a few days, looks like a pretty straight shot of close to 1200 mi. Plan on doing about 300 miles a day max, anybody have recommendations on campgrounds in rout and while there. Any low bridges or tunnels to watch for.

I was stationed at the Air Force base @ Rapid City for seven years. Did lots of camping. My all time favorite is Horse Thief Campround in Hill City, SD.

Their website doesnt do it justice. Its very centrally located to everything in the Black Hills.
Have a good time!

Camp there two years ago. Take a day trip through Cluster State park, very large herd of buffalo there. Also a small group of very friendly jackasses looking for a handout in the form of apples. Locals flock there in afternoon to feed them. Also checkout the drive, there are three tunnels that where built to frame Mt Rushmore when you view from the opposite end. Neat, they keep the trees cut so Mt Rushmore is in full view all time.

Big Pines Campground is Custer is a great place to base out of. This is a small private campground, very clean and very friendly.

Easy to get to everything, yet off the beaten path.

While you're in the Rushmore area, be sure to stop by the Alpine Inn in Hill City one evening for their filet mignon. And save room -- a LOT of room -- for dessert.

When we took a group to the Black Hills last year we stayed at Rafter J Bar. It's an excellent park, and convenient to Hill City, Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse and Custer. Cindy and I also stayed at Custer Gulch, located between Custer and the entrance to Custer State Park around 2006, and that worked well for us, but in part because our focus was on the buffalo roundup in the park.

X2 on Rafter J Bar campground. We stayed there several years ago in the 'Ranch Camp' Section. Great place. Link: Rafter J Bar Ranch
