Need Help I10 or I20 from Tampa to Los Angeles

Last week we came from Tampa to LA and I 10 about beat us to death through Louisiana to Beaumont, Tx. I am considering taking I 20 on the return trip. Any suggestions and also best place to get back on I 10 would be great-full. This trip coming out was awful and I thought the trailer was going to fall apart. Thanks in advance. John

It's 14 degrees in DFW right now. Pay attention to the weather it's also supposed almost 70 later this week.

If you take 20 you could cut across Louisiana or Mississippi, not really a "good" way.

I think I-10 vs I-20 is the same as any other freeway debate, parts of them are good and parts of them are bad but can't really say one is better than the other. Good luck!

Taking the 20 will add a LOT of time to your route for not much better roads.

I hate the section of 10 you noted as well. Last week, I worked in Houston so I took the camper with me and stayed at a local RV Resort. As I don't like that section of 10, I tried a different Route.

For you, just after Vidor, you would exit onto TX12. Then stay on TX 12 until it runs into LA190. 190 runs parallel to 10 all the way to Baton Rouge where you will take 110S back to 10E on the East side of the MS River bridge.

All our roads are abysmal so there are a few sections of junk, but they are usually in a town where the PSL is pretty low so it's not too bad. I liked this route as I could comfortably do the speed limit or better without worrying about lots of traffic and other potential disasters. It adds maybe 90 minutes to the trip but was much more comfortable than my usual experience towing on I10.

Best of luck.

Just stay on 20 to Atlanta and head south from there.

I-10 rough Spots

I -10 has many rough segments in TX, MS, and AL that we have to slow to 40 MPH with our V lite. The smooth segments of asphalt are V E R Y nice though.

I-20 through Atlanta is congested. We use I-85 to go toward Columbus GA to get home (west side of GA) from the west.
But you probably would want to use I-75 out of Atlanta.
Hope this helps.

thanks so much

We are not leaving La till spring. I think I'm going to give the Louisiana 190 a try. . We are in no rush to get home. an opportunity to see some different scenery. Any other suggestions would be welcome. again thanks so much for the replies.

I went from San Diego to Tampa and took I-10, but that was in January and I wanted to avoid cold as much as possible.

Get to I-20 in Jackson, MS (I-10 to US 49 north to Hattiesburg and on to Jackson) Nice RV park at the Ameristar Casino in Vicksburg)

Stay on I-20 until it joins I-10 in west Texas near Van Horn.

Bypass Phoenix: I-8 west to Gila Bend then Hwy 85 (newly made four lane divided) north to I-10 at Buckeye

On the Ameristar RV Park: We stated there about a year and a half ago. It is a nice, no frills park, BUT.....our rig is right at 40' plus the toad and we tried multiple spots before they finally found one we mostly fit into. Still hung out some, but not much. Very, very tight spaces. Just beware depending on your rig size.

So grateful to read this thread. I am wondering if there have been any updates to this route? We are planning to go from the New Orleans area to Sulphur, LA. 190 would work, unless there have been any improvements to I-10?

If you're looking for a good place to stop for the night after Louisiana, check out Cowtown RV park in Aledo, TX. Aledo is on the western edge of Fort Worth and I-20 runs straight through it. The RV park is on the south side of I-20, just exit off the west bound side and loop back under the bridge. Very nice folks, quiet and clean. Not fancy, but great for a night. Stayed there many times. I want to say it's like Exit 418 but not sure.

Here are two more close to I-20, in Texas that I will recommend.
Mill Creek Ranch in Canton, Texas. 130 Miles West of Shreveport, La.
Oak Creek RV Park 17 Miles West of Weatherford, Texas
