Also thinking of heading there late this year or next. Would love to hear reports of good / bad campgrounds and other area attractions.

We lived in that area when I was in high school. We always stayed in the Emmet county parks which are about 40 minutes away. Emmet County Conservation - Maps and Directions The crowds are less and it is still within a drive to Spirit Lake and Okaboji

well, I can speak from experience!! We are from Sioux Falls, Sd and we have a membership at Cutty's in Okoboji, IA. We have 4 kids: 20, 11, 9, and 6. Granted, the oldest does not camp with us anymore, but as for the younger ones, holy cow. SO much for them to do at Cutty's!! paddleboats, game room, TV, crafts, 2 min. walk to the beach. I believe they are offering campsites to non-members now, too. we have a seasonal site. loads of fun, clean mature campground. we love it.
